Jason White's SS Green Light Racing Dodge Ram paced Thursday's final "Happy
Hour" practice session in preparation for the NextEra Energy Resources 250
NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race at Daytona International Speedway.
But the big story wasn't who went fast, it was who got caught up in mayhem.
Ron Hornaday Jr. and Johnny Benson, the two most recent Truck Series champions,
got together in Turn 2 early in the 2-hour session, with Hornaday's Kevin
Harvick Inc. Chevrolet Silverado tapping the No. 95 Team Gill Racing Ford F-150
of Benson, who went down the track on the backstrech, where he collected his
teammate Dennis Setzer.
Hornaday accepted responsibility for triggering the incident. "It was just
stupid," said the four-time series champion.
"I got hit, spun out," shrugged Benson. "Better today than tomorrow I guess."
On top of the speed charts was a surprising White, who lapped the 2.5-mile track
at 185.200 miles per hour in his Dodge.
Second-fast was two-time defending Daytona winner Todd Bodine in the No. 30
Germain Racing Toyota Tundra, which had a best lap of 184.309 mph. Then it was
team owner/driver Kyle Busch at 183.382 in his Toyota. Completing the top five
were Johnny Sauter, 183.109 mph in the ThorSport Chevrolet Silverado, and Rick
Crawford's Circle Bar Racing Ford F-150 at 182.786 mph.
