Setzer Wins at South Boston

Dennis Setzer and Travis Kvapil led a one-two Chevrolet sweep of Big Daddy's South Boston Speedway Saturday as Setzer won for the third time in 2003 and Kvapil significantly narrowed Brendan Gaughan's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship lead. Setzer, one of four drivers to trade the lead five times on the .4-mile oval, passed Andy Houston on the race's 159th lap to take the point for good. The Newton, N.C. veteran, who also won a NASCAR Busch Series race here in 1994, led by up to four seconds but was forced to hold off Kvapil in a two-lap, shootout finish after Gaughan spun in Turn 3 on lap 244. Kvapil, who'd been better in traffic than the leader, spun the tires of his IWX Motor Freight Chevrolet when the green flag waved for the final time at lap 252. He finished .984-second behind the winner who averaged a race record 73.337 mph. Setzer, who earlier won short track races at Mesa Marin Raceway and nearby Martinsville Speedway, won $44,950. The winner had finished second in the race twice - in 2001-02. Kvapil, denied his second victory of the year, still made major gains in the points department. His finish, coupled with Gaughan's run from Bud Pole to 15th place, pared a 72-point deficit to just 20 with four races remaining on the schedule. Ted Musgrave, who wrecked his Mopar Dodge in a practice accident, battled back from early handling problems to finish a close third. Musgrave stands 58 points back in third with Setzer now 74 out in fourth. Gaughan, engaged in a fierce fight for eighth place with David Starr and Bobby Hamilton, made contact with Starr in the track's third turn and spun out. Jon Wood, who led early, took fourth in his Bob Graham for President Ford. Rick Crawford was fifth in the Circle Bar Motel & RV Ford. The second five was comprised of Houston, Raybestos Rookie leader Carl Edwards, Bobby Hamilton, David Starr and Robert Pressley. All but Pressley completed 253 laps - three more than the scheduled race distance. The championship battle continues next Saturday at Texas Motor Speedway where Gaughan rides a three-race winning streak - including June's stop at the 1.5-mile speedway.
