Starr Has Lady Luck on His Side at Las Vegas Motor Speedway

David Starr, winless in 65 previous appearances, out dueled NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series points leader Mike Bliss to capture Sunday's Las Vegas 350 at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. Starr, the Bud Pole winner, took over the lead when Ted Musgrave's Mopar Performance Dodge cut a tire on the 142nd of 146 laps. Starr, driving the Spears Manufacturing Chevrolet, held at .291 second lead over Bliss's IWX Motor Freight Chevrolet at the white flag but expanded his advantage to .492 at the checkered flag. Starr, who averaged a record 135.394 mph, won $43,200 plus a $10,000 Craftsman bonus for prevailing from the pole. Dennis Setzer finished third, followed by Travis Kvapil and Jason Leffler. There were 12 lead changes among six drivers with only two cautions consuming 10 laps. Bliss expanded his points lead to 85 over Crawford with three races remaining on the 2002 schedule.  The CAT Rental Store team’s up and down season is now heading to a possible top-five finish in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series point standings. They have finished in the top-five in five of the last seven races and with their fourth place finish in the Las Vegas 350K, they are now only 110 points from a top-five position in the point standings.
