CHEVY RACING: Lucas Oil 150 Pre-Race Report

TEAM CHEVY SILVERADO ON THE TRACK:   Dayne Pierantoni, GM Racing Silverado Program Manager, NCTS: "Phoenix has traditionally been a very good track for our Silverado drivers. Both Ron (Hornaday) and Kevin (Harvick) have a pair of wins at PIR. They both have had great success there since early in their careers in Southwest Tour and Winston West competition. Matt has had some strong runs as well.  All of our Silverados have been solid on tracks similar to PIR, flat and fast. The drama will be intense with the championship points so close, but our Silverado teams and drivers are up to the task. Qualifying well is critical because track position is so important. The pit road at Phoenix is one of the trickiest on the circuit so having good pit box selection is key to getting on and off pit road well.  Bottom line, this race is pivotal every year in the championship battle and Friday night will be no exception; it will be a very exciting night in the Arizona desert."

FROM THE DRIVER'S SEAT:
RON HORNADAY
, NO. 33 VFW SILVERADO: "I have been pretty successful at Phoenix International Raceway over the years. I have had a lot of great races there and have two wins there, in 1998 and 1999. It's a flat race track for the most part. It has a little more banking in turns one and two than in turns three and four. We have been really good this year on the flatter, shorter tracks. We've won at Memphis, Gateway and New Hampshire and all of those are a mile or half-mile tracks. We have the same truck that we won back-to-back races with at Gateway and New Hampshire, and I think that it will be good at Phoenix."

KEVIN HARVICK, NO. 2 CAMPING WORLD SILVERADO: "Phoenix is one of those places that I grew up racing on.  I raced a lot in the Southwest Tour, Winston West and Truck Series races at Phoenix.  I have learned the characteristics of the race track and the little things that you can do when your car is not handling perfect.  I like the flat race tracks.  Racing at Phoenix my entire career has also translated into flat-track success not only in the Truck Series but in the Nationwide and Sprint Cup Series. I don't really see Phoenix as a short track.  Even though places like Phoenix and New Hampshire are only a mile, they both have a lot of room to race.  Phoenix is always a fun race track.  There are always at least two lanes, and sometimes even more, to pass.  I always seem to do well at Phoenix so I'm excited to see what we can do as I climb back in the seat of the No. 2 Chevrolet."

MATT CRAFTON, NO. 88 MENARDS SILVERADO: "Racing at Phoenix is almost going home for me. I spent so much of my early career racing there. I just love the track. It is tricky to get around so the driver has a lot to do with a successful day there.  I have had some good runs in the Truck Series. We really need to get back on track after the last two races.  We had an awesome Silverado for Texas and it got wrecked in practice. Our goal is to go to Phoenix and Homestead, be contenders for wins and gain as many points as we can."

DONNY LIA, NO. 81 NATIONRIDES.COM SILVERADO: "I really enjoy running on the flat one-milers.  I have a lot of experience at Loudon, New Hampshire and I think that will help me some at Phoenix.  With the chemistry and communication between myself and Eric Philips getting better every week and my experience on the short flat tracks, I feel we can go to Phoenix and get ourselves no less than a good solid top-10 finish."

T.J. BELL, NO. 7 SPONGETECH/HOME4THEHOLIDAYS. ORG SILVERADO: "We're really looking forward to racing at Phoenix.  We're debuting a new sponsor with SpongeTech on the No. 7 Chevy Silverado and we'll be racing on the West Coast which is close to home for me.  I've raced at Phoenix twice before; once in a Nationwide car and once in a Truck, and I'm looking forward to racing there again.  The track is unlike any other track that we race at all year."

CHAD MCCUMBEE, NO. 8 MALCOMSON CONSTRUCTION SILVERADO: "Atlanta and Texas I felt would be places we could excel, but instead we struggled more than we have in the past.  After being involved in a crash at Texas it is a little frustrating to be back outside the top 10.  Our mile track program has improved week after week this season and I feel going into Phoenix we have a good shot at being very competitive. I have only been to phoenix one other time and it is a very unique place.  Hopefully we can rebound and get some points back with a good finish this weekend."
