SETZER: Top 13 Posted after Adjustment Issues at Texas

Dennis Setzer and the No. 18 Dodge Racing team fought a loose-in, tight-off condition during the running of the Chevy Silverado 350K at Texas Motor Speedway Halloween night. Regardless of making numerous wedge and air pressure adjustments during the 147-lap event they continued to battle a truck that would not turn in the corners. He finished the 23rd race of the 2008 season in 13th position.

After posting times outside the top 15 during two practices on Thursday afternoon Setzer knew he had his work cut out for him during qualifying later that evening. After a variety of changes were made to the No. 18 Dodge Ram Setzer bounced back and posted a speed of 177.043mph, good enough for the 11th starting position.

Just 13 laps into the event Setzer had maneuvered his way into the fourth position. "It is neutral," he said on lap 14. "We have only had nine green flag laps so we will see how it goes."

It didn't take long for the handling on the Carter County Dodge to waiver. By lap 36 Setzer had fallen to the seventh position and was struggling with a tight race truck. "It has lost total grip," he said the following lap.

As lap 50 neared Crew Chief Marcus Richmond was carefully calculating the fuel mileage and instrumenting a plan for a green-flag stop. "We are pitting on lap 58 for fuel and tires," he radioed in to his driver, who was running eighth on the track.

Luckily, the third caution of the night waved for an accident in turn two, one lap earlier than the calculated time from Richmond.  It allowed Setzer to get help and pit for fuel, four fresh tires and a wedge adjustment. Just before he went to leave his pit box a lug nut fell off the right rear of the No. 18 Dodge Ram. The problem was fixed and Setzer was on his way in 12th position.

Just after the restart a distressed Setzer radioed in, "I think I have a right front tire going down," he said. "Something is not right." Richmond assured Setzer to hang on and he would take a look at the tire through the binoculars on the next lap.

Once again the Dodge Racing Team had luck on their side as Setzer dodged and missed a fellow competitor's spinning truck on the very next lap. The fourth caution waved on lap 66 for the spin and Setzer made his way down pit road.

The Dodge Racing Team jumped into action changing all four tires and adding fuel. He restarted in the 15th spot.

"It is loose on entrance," described Setzer to Richmond on lap 90. "It is like it loses momentum down the straightaway." The final caution waved five laps later due to a spin in turn four. Richmond made the call to bring Setzer down pit road for service. The Dodge Racing Team changed all four tires, added fuel and made another wedge adjustment. He restarted 15th with 49 laps left in the event.

"The adjustments helped a little," said Setzer as he moved into the 14th position on lap 114.

Despite struggling with a loose-in, tight-off combination much of the night Setzer was able to pick up one more position before the checkered flag. He finished 13th and remains eighth in the 2008 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series Championship point standings.

Ron Hornaday Jr. went on to win the Chevy Silverado 350K. Kyle Busch finished second, Johnny Benson, Todd Bodine and Colin Braun followed in the top five.
