For the second week in a row the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series battled Mother Nature as rain wreaked havoc on the weekend schedule. David Starr, driver of the No. 11 Zachry Toyota Tundra, battled the inclimate weather as well as the flu to work his way to a respectable 14th place finish in the running of the E-Z-GO 200 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway.
With Friday's activities being rained out for the second week in a row, the veteran driver used the day to recover from a bout with the flu. While this proved beneficial for Starr's health, the track time was needed for the driver and team to work with the relatively new truck they brought to the track.
"The track time that we were supposed to have on Friday was going to be important for us because we have rebuilt this truck since last year and are running it for the first time this year," said Starr. "Rick Gay and the guys on this No. 11 Zachry team put together a great truck, as usual, and when we finally got on the track for our practice on Saturday morning, we were pretty good."
The rain on Friday also resulted in the cancellation of qualifying so Starr was relegated to starting the E-Z-GO 200 from the 14th position. But sunny skies welcomed the field as they received the green flag for the 130-lap event. Still fighting a touch of the flu, Starr battled a "loose-in" and "tight-off" handling condition on his No. 11 Zachry Toyota Tundra. Crew Chief Rick Gay made a few chassis adjustment calls during each of the three pit stops during the event and had the driver liking what he had for the latter portion of the race.
"Rick made some great adjustment calls and my pit crew once again was awesome on pit stops," Starr said. "I was having a little trouble in turns one and two in the early portion of the race but we made some chassis adjustments that really got me pretty good. This was not exactly the finish that we wanted but we are gaining on it and that is positive for all of us. We go to Texas next which is very similar to Atlanta and I think we have some things we learned here today that will really help us there. "
Starr remains in the twelfth position in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship point standings, just 73 points behind the tenth spot.
This Friday night, October 31, 2008, David Starr and Red Horse Racing will return to action as the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series heads to Texas Motor Speedway for some Halloween fun and the running of the Chevy Silverado 350k. Starr, who resides in the area, will take the green flag shortly after 9:00 p.m. Eastern. SPEED will have live television coverage of the 147-lap event, beginning at 8:30 p.m. Eastern with the NCTS Set-up. Select affiliates of MRN Radio, along with Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 128 and XM Radio Channel 104 will also have the live radio broadcast.
