COOK: Loose Wheel Stalls Top 5 at Atlanta
TruckSeries.com Printer Version

  Discuss

Sometimes in racing a one-dollar part can put a $100,000 racecar out of contention. For Terry Cook and the No. 59 Team ASE/Harris Trucking Toyota, it was four one-dollar parts that ended their chase for a top-five finish in the E-Z-Go 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway.

Cook lined up 14th at the start after qualifying was washed out due to rain. On the start Cook stayed up in the high groove just inches from the wall and after just a six laps he was already racing for a top five position. The first caution of the day came out on lap 15 and Cook came down pit road for four fresh tires. When NASCAR waved the caution again on lap 25 - a scheduled competition caution to allow teams to make adjustments - crew chief Danny Rollins sent Cook out with fuel only. Cook gained track position with that move and restarted eighth. Within a few laps he was again racing for a position in the top five.

Cook came down pit road for his second scheduled tire change of the day on lap 72. After Cook went back on the track he noticed a vibration in the new set of tires that wasn't there before. The vibration got worse with each lap and Cook finally had to bring the truck down pit road. The time lost on pit road cost Cook five laps to the leaders and he eventually finished 28th.

"We had four lug nuts work their way loose after that second pit stop and it felt like I was driving with the left rear tire flat," Cook said. "Atlanta is not a place where you want to have a wheel come loose so we came down to get the lug nuts tightened. Unfortunately the loose wheel damaged the studs and it came loose again. Danny called for a wheel spacer on there and that worked; it got the lugs to where they were gripping on the studs.

"It's a shame that happened because we had a great truck today," Cook continued. "We were starting to get a little tight but that wasn't anything that we couldn't have worked through. We raced with the 99 the 30 and the 22 and beat them all day long before our problems and they ended up in the top five. It's just a shame we didn't get the finish we deserved here today. We only have a few more races with the ASE people and they were all here today and we wanted to get up there and give them a top-five finish. We'll take this truck back and get it polished up and take it to Texas and hopefully get them a top-five there."

Cook now sits tied for tenth in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship standings with Chad McCumbee. Both are now 138 points behind ninth-place Jack Sprague and 146 points behind eighth-place Dennis Setzer.

Next up for Cook and the No. 59 Team ASE/Harris Trucking Toyota is the Chevy Silverado 350 at Texas Motor Speedway on Friday October 31. SPEED will have the live broadcast starting with a 30-minute pre-race show at 8:30 P.M. Eastern. MRN Radio will have the live radio broadcast on selected affiliates nationwide and on Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 128 (Channel 104 on XM Satellite Radio).
