CHEVY RACING: Newman Wins E-Z-GO 200 at Atlanta
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

Ryan Newman powered the No. 2 American Commercial Lines Silverado past his Kevin Harvick, Inc. teammate Ron Hornaday, Jr., No. 33 VFW Silverado, on the last lap at Atlanta Motor Speedway to claim his career-first NASCAR Camping World Truck Series (NCTS) victory.

In his first NCTS start, Newman led three times for a total of 11 laps in the E-Z-GO 200, making him just the 19th driver in NASCAR history to win a race in all three of NASCAR's Big Three national series - Sprint Cup Series, Nationwide Series and NCTS.

It was the first NCTS win for the No. 2 KHI Silverado as well as win number one for crew chief Ernie Cope.

Hornaday, with his runner-up finished pulled within 31 points of the championship leader with three races remaining in the 25-race season. The three-time and defending NCTS champion led three times for a total of 110s of the 130-lap race.

T.J. Bell, No. 7 Home4theHolidays.org Silverado finished ninth.

Denny Hamlin, Todd Bodine and Scott Speed complete the top-five finishers. Johnny Benson continues as the points leader.

The next event on the NCTS schedule will be October 31 at Texas Motor Speedway.

RYAN NEWMAN, NO. 2 AMERICAN COMMERCIAL LINES SILVERADO, STARTED 10TH, FINISHED 1st: "Great day for me obviously in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series and Atlanta Motor Speedway.  I want to thank the fans for coming out as well.  Kevin and DeLana (Harvick) gave me this opportunity and we have the foundation on the side of the truck.  I also have to thank American Commerical Lines for supporting our truck.

I didn't really save my stuff, I just took it for what it was worth and I was pretty amazed that I got the opportunity to run them down.  Luckily it stayed green because we had two really good race trucks."

TELL US ABOUT RACING WITH HORNADAY.  YOU WERE UP TOP, HE WAS ON THE BOTTOM.  IT WAS SOME PRETTY GOOD STUFF. "Well he raced me like a gentleman and obviously he is racing for a championship and we were going for the win and he knew that because he was racing for the win too.  He's a gentlemanly racer."

IT MUST HAVE BEEN FUN TO COME IN AND HAVE NO PRESSURE AND COME IN AND JUST RACE TODAY? "It was.  I wish we would have had a chance to qualify these things because I could hold my Chevrolet Silverado wide open.  I was wide open most of the last part of the race because it was a great handling race truck.  Ernie Cope (crew chief) and all the guys at KHI do a great job."

RON HORNADAY, JR., NO. 33 VFW SILVERADO, STARTED 2ND, FINISHED 2nd: "Hats off to KHI (Kevin Harvick, Inc.) This is what it is all about and that is what that truck is supposed to be running like. I just missed the corner off of two. The VFW Chevrolet was awesome. To lead that many laps, that is what Kevin and DeLana (Harvick) are all about. I have to thank Rick Ren (crew chief) and all the guys, Camping World and VFW. This is for all the folks out there in Iraq, all of our military. It was a good day, we led a lot of laps. We gained a little bit on Johnny (Benson) in the points, I don't know what that yellow was for, I was about to put Johnny down a lap. We will take it down and go on.

"I am just proud of my whole team. Kyle Busch has won this thing the last three times, to out run him today is cool. He was that dominate, he was running different lines. Then Ryan (Newman) comes in here and steals my thunder, darn it, (LAUGHS) in the last couple of laps. That just shows how close these trucks are. Ryan was running up top and I was running the bottom and I missed it. The next three (races) I am looking forward to; I didn't think I could slip and slide that much here. I learned a lot watching Busch here last year. I have to thank Kevin and DeLana again, this is awesome.

"I don't know if I can say it, but second stinks. We ran good all day. That just shows what KHI has got.  Ryan ran the top and I ran the bottom. He started following me down there in three (3) and four (4) and he figured it out.

"I just missed the corner coming off of two (2), when you miss it it is 3/10th to a half of second. He ran me down there and the draft pulled me around and got me sideways going in to three, he got the momentum. Made a charge coming back off the corner and again, missed the corner. Got all the way through there and just rode up alongside of him, if I had tried to turn I would have wrecked both of us. A good race for the VFW and Camping World moved aside for this weekend so it meant a lot.

WERE YOU WONDERING IF RYAN WOULD LET YOU KEEP THE EXTRA POINTS BECAUSE YOU ARE IN A TOUGH CHAMPIONSHIP BATTLE AND HOW FRUSTRATING WAS IT WHEN THAT CAUTION CAME OUT WHEN YOU WERE ABOUT TO PUT BENSON A LAP DOWN? "I am sure if it was Kevin, he would have done that but we are going to race hard like that and that is what we are supposed to do. We race clean and raced hard and that No. 2 truck needs a win. That thing needs a sponsor and it shows that truck is capable of winning. That truck didn't beat me, I beat myself. I missed the corner and he got a good run. You can only mess up once and I did it three times in the race. That was it. It hurt us 10 points but we led the most laps so we got 10 there. They aren't going to move over for me, that is for sure. That is what this truck series is all about.

"I am still looking for that debris when that caution came out. (LAUGHS). I saw Johnny a straightaway up there and I pushed my truck as hard as I could. I took a chance on blowing my tires and doing what I had to do to make sure I put him a lap down. We didn't have that many trucks down a lap right there and he was running 16th or 17th at the time. It would have hurt him but they put two tires on and that was what bit them a Vegas and it almost bit them again today. Darn, it didn't work out to our advantage and it didn't work out with the fuel mileage last week. We are going to keep doing what we have to do and hopefully Ryan don't run too many of out truck races cause he took 10 points away (LAUGHS) but other than that. I think he is going to run another race, we have three left we are looking forward to it."

T.J. BELL, JR, NO. 7 HOME4THEHOLIDAYS.ORG SILVERADO, STARTED 21ST, FINISHED 9th:  ON HIS FIFTH CONSECUTIVE TOP-10 FINISH:  "I wish we could have qualified.  We started off a little tight, but this Home4TheHolidays.org Chevrolet Silverado was unbelievable.  The guys at TRG Motorsports did great.  Our Chevrolet was fast ever since we unloaded it.  We worked on it all day long, and I think if we could have got the rear end into the race track a little bit better we would have finished even higher than ninth.  Hopefully we can get this thing turned around and run it at Texas Motor Speedway next weekend."

ON RACING THE FINAL LAPS AGAINST NSCS REGULAR, KYLE BUSCH:  "I knew he was coming and that I wasn't going to be able to hold him off forever.  It just helps my confidence being able to race against those guys.  That's the good thing about this Truck Series.  You've got Ryan Newman who won the race in a Chevy, Kyle Busch, Denny Hamlin and a lot of the Cup drivers who come to the Truck Series to race."

ON THE STREAK OF TOP-10 FINISHES:  "I think the team has confidence me and I have confidence in them.  And we're being able to work on trucks over and over again so we're able to build our notebook up and know what our trucks need.  That was evident when we came off the truck today with no practice yesterday and we were fast right away.  So hopefully we can get this thing fixed up from where I brushed the wall and we'll be even better in Texas."

MATT CRAFTON, NO. 88 MENARDS/MOEN SILVERADO, STARTED 4TH, FINISHED 29th: NOTE: Crafton suffered engine failure on lap 85. The finish dropped him from third to fifth in the standing. "I think it dropped a valve or something.  It's disgusting because we were third coming in but you can forget about it now.  Its kind of sickening because we'll probably be sixth and we just can't have anymore mistakes and we just have to try and get back up in the top three in points.  Its all we can work on.  My Chevy Silverado was good.  We were just going to work on it a little bit to try and make it a truck that could contend for the win.   I think (Ron) Hornaday was a little bit better than us on a short run but I believe we had a shot at him."

POST RACE WINNER'S PRESS CONFERENCE TRANSCRIPT:

RYAN NEWMAN - DRIVER
ERNIE COPE - CREW CHIEF
KEVIN HARVICK - TEAM OWNER

RYAN NEWMAN: "Not sure if I should retire from the truck series right here but I don't think Kevin or DeLana will let me do it right now. Just a great opportunity for me personally to be able to drive such a great piece of equipment in Kevin and DeLana's truck. Ernie (Cope, crew chief), did a great job. Off the truck we were quick. The race today, I spent a little bit more time than I wanted to being loose, but I was able to keep enough momentum up toward the end of the run. We struggled the first part of the run, then we were pretty good if not the best truck toward the end of a run. Luckily we had a 30 some lap run or whatever it was there at the end and that was good enough to be able to run Ron (Hornaday) back down. He raced me like a gentleman, obviously he is racing for a championship but he is a racer and he was racing for the win too. We had a good finish.

ERNIE COPE: "I am ecstatic, I don't even know what to say, this is awesome. It is my first win."

KEVIN HARVICK: "Obviously at the end there, we had had a good day with both trucks. I knew Ryan was starting to catch him (Ron Hornaday). When it comes down to the end like that, you obviously don't tell anybody what to do. When they are both racing for a win, it is pretty exciting. They know what they are doing from behind the wheel. To get the first win for the No. 2 truck and the first win for Ernie and first win for Ryan and first win for most everybody on that race team, they have been so close so many times this year and just couldn't close the deal. A lot of fun to be a part of. We had a great week last week and we had a great week this week. It just shows the strength of the team a little bit more than what has been able to show at the beginning of the year.

"Ron is right In the middle of a championship race and to be able for them to be able to cut it (the points difference) basically in half today with three races to go, it is going to be exciting. It has been a lot of fun to race with Benson. Those guys had a little bit of trouble today and came back to finish seventh (7th). They made a great recovery. For a while there I thought they were going to finish 15th or 16th and it was going to be really close. But it was fun to watch and just glad to be a part of it."

RYAN NEWMAN - TALK ABOUT GETTING BACK IN VICTORY LANE FOR THE FIRST TIME SINCE DAYTONA: "And it is the first time for me at Atlanta so that is special in itself too. We started off the year with a bang and it would be nice to be able to finish it with a bang, but this was a good shot and again I have to thank Kevin and DeLana for the opportunity. I wouldn't be here without them giving me this opportunity.

"Ernie did a great job setting up the truck and Ernie did a great job. And Kevin even told me how to do pit stops, so everything was good.

KEVIN HARVICK INTERJECTS: "I wasn't telling you how to do it, I was making a suggestion" (LAUGHS)

RYAN NEWMAN - WHAT IS THE SIGNIFICANCE OF WINNING YOUR FIRST RACE IN A CHEVROLET? (Newman is joining Stewart-Haas Racing in 2009 behind the wheel of Chevy Impala SS race cars) "This is my apprenticeship program, they said that next year to be able to start off the season good with Chevrolet, I needed to start running some truck series races and stuff like that, just to make sure I was Chevrolet material (LAUGHING, SAID IN JEST).

"In all seriousness, just a great opportunity. It is a lot of fun, it is a great race track. We all love this race track. It was great to be able to race Ron the way we did, I look forward to my relationship for years to come."

RYAN NEWMAN - WHAT WERE YOUR EXPECTATIONS OF A RACING A TRUCK AND WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE TRUCK AND THE CUP CAR? "It was a lot like what I expected. I have watched plenty of truck races to see kind of what to expect and learn some things about it. Obviously you know who is going to be your competition race wise and things like that. For me, it was kind of as expected, but again, in racing you never know what is going to happen."

KEVIN HARVICK - RON SAID HE THOUGHT MAYBE IF YOU WERE IN THE NO 2, YOU WOULD HAVE GIVEN HIM THE WIN OR LET YOU PASS HIM, IS THAT TRUE? "I don't think so. (LAUGHS) That is wishful thinking on his part. When it comes to winning races, that is what we are all here for. We are all here to win races and try to get to victory lane, if it had been fifth or sixth, maybe you might think about something like that for three or four points but not when it comes to winning."

RYAN NEWMAN - HOW DOES IT FEEL TO BE JUST THE 19TH DRIVER TO WIN A RACE IN ALL THREE TOP NASCAR SERIES? "It is pretty neat, it is pretty special. I think I have done it all in each series within my first 30 starts so that is something else too I would say is pretty neat. Just again, happy to be driving what I was driving and doing what I was doing. Everything worked out all right for us. If the cautions would fell different, I am pretty sure Ron Hornaday would be sitting here right now."

KEVIN HARVICK - WHAT ARE YOUR PLANS FOR THE NATIONWIDE SERIES NEXT YEAR? "Right now we don't know exactly what is what. I know that we are going to run some Nationwide races but we don't know exactly what is who and where and what right now."

ERNIE COPE - WHAT IS IT LIKE TO HAVE RYAN NEWMAN COME IN AND WIN WITH YOUR TEAM? "They are all pumped up. Kevin driving last week. Ryan driving, it is so awesome. It makes it a lot easier, these guys are awesome. That is why they race on Sunday."

KEVIN HARVICK - THE NO. 2 TRUCK STRUGGLE EARLIER THIS YEAR BUT HAS PERFORMED UP FRONT THE LAST TWO WEEKS, WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE? "I think an owner's standpoint, we have the No. 33 racing for a championship and we just needed to get some momentum to get the No. 2 truck up there. It has run fast, it just hasn't finished a lot of races, I think we ran pretty much one-two or two-three with Ron and this week it was one-two again. Just finishing the deal and getting some momentum for next year and hopefully have both trucks racing for the championship instead of just one."
