NOTES OF INTEREST:
HISTORY OF THE RACE - This is only the third time the truck series will race on the high banks of Talladega Superspeedway. The series appeared here for the first time in 2006 before an estimated crowd of over 90,000. Both of the previous races have been won from the pole position.
CLOSEST BATTLE AT THE TOP THIS LATE IN SEASON - Only one point separates former NASCAR Camping World Truck Series champion Ron Hornaday, Jr. and points leader Johnny Benson in the 2008 points race headed to Talladega. This is the series' closest margin with six races remaining. Benson and Hornaday have dominated this year's competition, winning 9 of the 19 races.
CLOSE COMPETITION - The 2007 Mountain Dew 250 Fueled by Winn-Dixie featured one of the closest, and most exciting, finishes recorded in any of the series that race here. The final time the trucks crossed the start/finish line Todd Bodine, Rick Crawford and Johnny Benson were three wide. The race went to Todd Bodine by 0.014 seconds over Crawford with Benson's front bumper on Crawford's door.
POLE POSITION - In the two previous NASCAR Camping World Truck Series races at Talladega the winner of the Keystone Pole Award on Friday has gone on to win the Mountain Dew 250 Fueled by Winn-Dixie on Saturday, putting an emphasis on a good start.
ALABAMA DRIVER COMPETES AT HOME TRACK - One Alabama driver, Rick Crawford from Mobile, Ala., is set to compete in this year's Mountain Dew 250 Fueled by Winn-Dixie. Crawford is currently sixth in the championship standings, 246 points behind leader Johnny Benson. Crawford finished 15th at Talladega in its inaugural race and 2nd in last year's race.
ALABAMA CREW MEMBERS - Other Alabama natives competing the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series are:
JR Norris (Mulga) - No. 15 truck chief
Jeremy Lewis (Mobile) - No. 2 truck chief
Jessica Madison (Luverne) - No. 40 media relations
Greg Passen (Birmingham) - No. 51 tire specialist
Kelly Stewart (Theodore) - No. 7 transporter driver
Randy Armstrong (Mobile) - No. 2 rear tire changer
Kevin Ray (Eastaboga) - No. 11 spotter
Tyler Patterson (Huntsville) - No. 33 media relations
YOUTH VS. EXPERIENCE - Among fulltime drivers, Erik Darnell, 24, became the series' youngest winner (Kansas Speedway, April 28) since Brandon Whitt (21) at Memphis Motorsports Park on July 23, 2005. Since then, there have been only five winners under the age of 40: Darnell, Kyle Busch (21), Clint Bowyer (27), Terry Cook (38), Travis Kvapil (31) and David Starr (38). Mike Skinner, at age 50 years 0 months when he won at Kentucky Speedway, joined Joe Ruttman as the only drivers past 50 to win in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series. Ruttman was age 56 years six months when he scored his last victory at the old Pikes Peak International Raceway on May 20, 2001. All of his 13 victories came after Ruttman celebrated his 50th birthday on Oct. 28, 1994. Skinner is just the sixth driver age 50 and over to win a NASCAR national series race. Dick Trickle is the oldest - 56 years eight months when he won the Sept. 5, 1998 NASCAR Busch Series race at Darlington Raceway. Mark Martin was age 47 years eight months when he won last year's Mountain Dew 250.
MIKE WALLACE TO POWER THE NO. 9 GEICO TUNDRA AT TALLADEGA - Mike Wallace will get behind the wheel of the No. 9 Germain Racing GEICO Tundra in the Oct. 4th Mountain Dew 250. With four NASCAR Camping World Truck Series victories, Wallace is in search for his first at Talladega. Wallace finished 17th in the fall race at Talladega last year.
RAYBESTOS® ROOKIE REPORT - Colin Braun is the current Raybestos® Rookie of the Year leader by 19 points over Donny Lia. Raybestos® Rookie of the Year contenders in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series this year include (in order of current point standings): Braun, Lia, Brian Scott, Justin Marks, Marc Mitchell, Scott Speed and Andy Lally. The most rookies to win a race in a single season is three in 1997: Kenny Irwin, Tony Raines and Randy Tolsma. However, two rookies have won this year. Lia posted the first victory by a rookie at the Ohio 250 at Mansfield Motorsports Park. The next week Scott Speed followed suit in the AAA Insurance 200 at Dover International Speedway.
TOP FIVES HARD TO COME BY - The 2007 winner of the Mountain Dew 250 Fueled by Winn-Dixie is the only driver in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series to finish in the top five in both races at Talladega Superspeedway. Bodine ran fourth in 2006. He finished both races where he started.
THE FASTEST TRUCK ON THE CIRCUIT - The 2007 Mountain Dew 250 Fueled by Winn-Dixie was the race that featured the fastest speed achieved by a truck in any race that year. Marc Mitchell was clocked at 193.832 mph in his No. 08 People Against Drugs truck.
WANT EXCITEMENT - The 2007 Mountain Dew 250 Fueled by Winn-Dixie almost doubled the number of green flag passes in any other race that year. NASCAR's most Competitive track served fans 4,289 passes under green flag conditions in just 69 laps that were completed under the green flag. The runner up to Talladega in green flag passes was Daytona International Speedway with 2,661 passes.
LOGANO MAKES TRUCK DEBUT - Joey Logano will get some more seat time this weekend, as he makes his NASCAR Camping World Truck Series debut. He will drive the No. 59 Toyota. Logano, as he prepares to run full-time next season in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series, has already run two NASCAR Sprint Cup and 14 NASCAR Nationwide Series races.
BODINE LOOKS FOR BIG TRACK SWEEP - Todd Bodine is going for three consecutive victories on the series' two largest tracks. Bodine is the defending winner of the Mountain Dew 250 Fueled by Winn Dixie and captured the 2008 season opener at Daytona International Speedway. If accomplished, it would be the first time in series' history.
IT'S A GROWN MAN'S GAME - In the 11 races held at Talladega Superspeedway and Daytona International Speedway, only one driver (Carl Edwards, 24, Daytona 2004) under the age of 40 has been able to crack Victory Lane at either track.
PRE-RACE DIGNITARIES - National recording artist, John Berry, will sing the National Anthem for Saturday's Mountain Dew 250 Fueled by Winn-Dixie.
Heath Schall of Alabama Raceway Ministries will deliver the invocation prior to the Mountain Dew 250.
Tim McNamara, Sr. Category Manager for Winn-Dixie, will wave the green flag as Honorary Starter of the Mountain Dew 250 Fueled by Winn Dixie, while Larry Biggerstaff, Sr. Director of Merchandising for Winn-Dixie will serve as Grand Marshal.
