SETZER: Disappointing Finish at LVMS, But Good Points Day
Sometimes in NASCAR things don't always go as planned. Matter of fact this
rang true for BHRVA as their hauler made its trek across country to Las Vegas.
It took four hauler drivers and two transporters to get the No. 18 United Dodge
to the Las Vegas Motor Speedway after a problem with the trailer plagued the
driver. So when Dennis Setzer made his first lap around the track for practice
it was a relief. It was more so when he qualified ninth continuing his streak of
top-10 starting positions. Then during the race Setzer started off loose but
became tight as the race went on. A faulty ignition box and a late race wreck
provided several challenges to the Dodge Racing Team throughout the 174-lap
event, but Setzer was able to rebound and bring home a 16th place finish.
Setzer started the event in the ninth position after posting a lap of 168.660
mph on Saturday afternoon. It was the team's sixth straight top-10 starting
position. "It is a tick loose," said Setzer after the race was underway. He had
fallen to 12th place on lap five due to the loose condition.
The second caution flag of the day waved 20 laps later on lap 25 for a spin in
turn four. Crew Chief Marcus Richmond made the call to bring the No. 18 United
Dodge down pit road for service. The Dodge Racing Team changed right side tires,
added fuel and went down one round on the track bar to help the loose condition.
He restarted in the eighth position.
Setzer was running 11th when an accident in turn three brought out the third
caution on lap 40. "It has started cutting off down the straightaway," said
Setzer. "I tried switching to the backup ignition box, but the problem
continued." To be safe Richmond brought Setzer down pit road under the caution.
The Dodge Racing Team jumped over the wall and went underneath the hood in
search of the problem. They made sure all wires were secure and sent Setzer on
his way. He restarted at the rear of the field in 23rd position.
By lap 53 the ignition problem had disappeared and Setzer was running 18th.
"Keep up the great lap times," encouraged Richmond. "Everyone else is falling
off and you are staying consistent."
An accident in turn one brought out the fourth caution of the night. Setzer made
his way down pit road for left side tires and fuel before returning to the
track. The majority of the lead pack took four tires instead of two allowing
Setzer to gain several positions and restart in fifth place. "I have lost total
grip on these tires," said Setzer while running seventh on lap 76. The caution
waved once again on lap 78 for an accident in turn two. "Our fuel window is not
until lap 86," said Richmond. "The way caution flags are falling I think we will
be fine to go ahead and pit now." On lap 79 Setzer made his way down pit road
for right side tires and two cans of fuel. Setzer returned to the track and came
back in for a top off before restarting on lap 82 in 19th position.
Setzer was running 15th when another caution waved just 16 laps later for a spin
in turn four. Richmond brought the No. 18 Dodge down pit road for more fuel and
a wedge adjustment in the right rear. Once again the majority of the front
runners took four tires which allowed Setzer to move up to fifth place on the
restart.
He was running eighth on lap 118 battling a minor tight condition. Another
caution waved several laps later for a spin in turn two, but Setzer stayed out.
On lap 132 Setzer was running ninth when the No. 51 vehicle went underneath him
heading into turn four. Setzer was holding his line when the No. 51 truck
snapped loose turning into the No. 18 United Dodge. Setzer was sent slamming
into the turn four wall suffering major damage.
He was able to drive the Dodge Ram back down pit road for front end and rear
deck lid repairs. The Dodge Racing Team jumped into action with hammers, steel
rods and bare bond in hand ready to put the truck back together. They were able
to beat back out the front end and bare bond the rear enough to send Setzer back
out without going a lap down. They also changed four tires and added fuel. He
restarted in on lap 136 in the 21st spot.
With less than 40 laps remaining Setzer made the best of the situation and used
his veteran driving skills to take care of the mangled truck and gain positions
at the same time. The No. 18 United Dodge came home 16th after a hard fought
night. Despite the disappointing finish Setzer gained points in the NCTS
championship standings and remains in ninth position.
