After a frustrating finish to an otherwise good day at Loudon, Terry Cook heads to Las Vegas Motor Speedway for Saturday's Qwik Liner 350 trying to get back into the top-10 when the checkered flag waves over the field. Cook also wants to solidify his status among the top-10 in the championship standings and a good finish will go a long way towards putting him position to walk across the stage in the awards banquet in November. Cook has a four career top-10 finishes at LVMS, including a career-best fourth-place finish last September.
Terry on the new LVMS configuration: "I think the new track is as good as the old track was at its best. We always raced under the lights at Las Vegas. The Cup and Nationwide cars always raced in the daytime when the track was very slick. They didn't see a lot of side-by-side racing like we did in the Truck Series because the track was a lot different at night. If they would have run all of their races at night like we did I doubt anyone would have ever said anything about reconfiguring the racetrack."
Do you like racing at Las Vegas? "I do like racing in Las Vegas. I love going out there to visit because there are a lot of fond memories for me and my whole family. But I like the tracks where the driver has to work the throttle. As a team we need to get back on the right page on the 1.5-mile tracks. Last year we were close to being wide open at Las Vegas, and with the tapered spacer plate the series is using now I have no doubt that we will be wide open all night long."
What tracks can you compare Las Vegas to? "I think the way you approach the banking is very similar to Charlotte. It's very abrupt just like Charlotte. The tracks race completely different but you can compare the setups very closely. We'll be using the same tire we ran at Charlotte too so there's another similarity."
You and Amy were married in Las Vegas - is this a special trip for you both? "It is special to both of us. We love the area and going there always brings back some very fond memories. We go out there for the race and that is always the priority but we also make the trip a mini-vacation. There is so much to do - the entertainment, the lights, the restaurants - it's hard to go out there and not have a good time."
Staying at the Strat: Cook and the Wyler Racing Team will be staying at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino during their stay in Las Vegas. The Stratosphere's 1,149-foot tower is the tallest observation tower in the U.S. and is home to the Big Shot, X-Scream, and Insanity, the Ride thrill rides. The Tower Shops inside the hotel replicate an international marketplace with themed streets reminiscent of Paris, Hong Kong, and New York. The Stratosphere Hotel and Casino will host a free autograph session with many NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers - including Terry Cook - on Friday at 6 P.M. local. For more information on the Stratosphere, visit www.stratospherehotel.com.
Terry's LVMS Truck: Terry will race chassis No. 84 this week in Las Vegas. This truck raced earlier this season at Kansas (19th), Texas (16th), and Nashville (12th) and was tested at Pocono.
Terry's LVMS Stats: Terry has made 9 starts at LVMS in his career, and he has one top-five finish (fourth in 2007) and four top-10 finishes.
