MUSGRAVE: Aiming to Get Back In Top 10 Groove at Vegas

Ted Musgrave heads into Las Vegas for this weekend's Qwik Liner Las Vegas 350 trying to get back in the top-10 groove: after three consecutive top-10 finishes at Nashville, Bristol, and Gateway, Musgrave was relegated to 17th at Loudon after some late-race pushing and shoving on the track nudged him out of the groove and towards the back of the top-20. Musgrave has had considerable success in the past at LVMS with a win on the old layout in 2001 and a runner-up finish on the new progressively banked configuration in 2006.

Do you like the new LVMS layout? "The new track and the new garage area is just awesome. As a driver I like tracks that have options. You can go high or go low here now. You don't have to ride around single file and wait your turn to pass someone or wait for someone to make a mistake."

How does it compare to the old layout? "I loved the way it was. I don't like to see the flat tracks torn up and reconfigured. Those are the tracks that put it in the driver's hands. I liked the old Homestead track and I really like racing at Milwaukee. I liked the old Las Vegas track but I like the new one too."

What are the challenges of the new track? "Coming to the pits was really tough on the old track. We've seen people come sliding off turn four and through the grass before and the new pit road has made it a little more foolproof for the drivers. It's not as bad now as it was then, but it still can be confusing if you aren't totally up on the wheel with it."

Can the Toyotas be competitive with the newly reduced tapered spacer at LVMS? "That remains to be seen. I think you'll see a lot of guys try the high groove right away, but then again the low groove is definitely shorter. I don't know that what we'll see will be totally different than what we've seen in the past, but I wouldn't be surprised if the Toyotas all tried the high line to try to keep that momentum up the best they can."

Ted's LVMS Truck: Ted will be racing chassis No. 15 this week. It is the same truck he drove to an eighth-place finish at Nashville Superspeedway in August. It is also the same truck Ted has run on the majority of the 1.5-mile speedways in 2008.

Ted's LVMS Stats: Ted has made eight career NCTS starts at Las Vegas Motor Speedway. He has one win (2001), three top-5 finishes (first in 2001, second in 2005 and 2006), and six top-10 finishes. He has completed 1,098 out of a possible 1,203 competition laps (91.3%). His average start is 9.2 and his average finish is 10.1.

Staying at the Strat: Musgrave and the HT Motorsports team will be staying at the Stratosphere Hotel and Casino during their stay in Las Vegas.  The Stratosphere's 1,149-foot tower is the tallest observation tower in the U.S. and is home to the Big Shot, X-Scream, and Insanity - the Ride thrill rides. The Tower Shops inside the hotel replicate an international marketplace with themed streets reminiscent of Paris, Hong Kong, and New York. The Stratosphere Hotel and Casino will host a free autograph session with many NASCAR Camping World Truck Series drivers - including Ted Musgrave - on Friday at 6 P.M. local.
