David Starr and the No. 11 Red Horse Racing team headed to Gateway International Raceway looking to bounce back from a disappointing Bristol race and gain momentum in the championship points battle. However, during Saturday afternoon's NASCAR Camping World Truck Series race Starr made contact with another competitor, sending his Toyota Tundra hard into the inside wall and ending his race early. Despite his 21st starting position, Starr steadily moved his way through the field and by lap 20 he was running in the top-15. The Houston, Texas native had a steady Tundra and spent over 70 laps in the top-ten before making contact with Rick Crawford on lap 132, while battling for the eighth position. The damage was very substantial to the No. 11 Toyota, ending the 160-lap event early and relegating Starr to a 28th-place finish.
"That was good hard racing out there," said Starr. "We were getting a little dicey but my Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra was awesome today. We got under the 14 truck (Crawford) going into turn one and coming off turn two it seemed like he came off the wall and kind of came down on me. Instead of running into him I tried to stay off him and we got the worst of it."
Starr was disappointed with the team's finish, but he was very proud of the effort that his whole Red Horse Racing team put into the weekend. This was Rick Gay's first outing as crew chief for the No. 11 Toyota Tundra. "The change was seamless as Rick stepped in to take over the leadership responsibilities," said Tom DeLoach, managing partner. "He was certainly up to the challenge as David commented several times during the race how good the truck felt. I'm pleased."
If the contact on the track had not been made, Starr was positive that he would have finished with another top-ten, as his truck was to his liking, race calls were good and his pit crew picked up numerous spots on pit road.
"We were having a great run out there today and were going to come home with a good finish," Starr said. "I am very disappointed for my team. Instead of taking someone else out of the race - I took myself out. The guys on this team are awesome and gave me great pit stops today and we picked up valuable track position on our stops. Again it is disappointing because we had a great race and instead of getting the finish we deserve we go home with a torn up race truck. This Red Horse Racing team always rebounds from stuff like this and that is what we will do as we head to New Hampshire next week."
With the 28th-place finish at the 1.25-mile St. Louis track, Starr dropped one position in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series championship standings. Starr is just nine points behind Chad McCumbee for eleventh and 116 points behind Terry Cook for the tenth position.
This Saturday afternoon, September 13, David Starr and the No. 11 Red Horse Racing team will head to New Hampshire Motor Speedway for the running of the Camping World RV Rental 200. Starr will look to rebound at the 1.058-mile flat track, when the green flag waves shortly after 3 P.M. Eastern. It will be televised live on SPEED, beginning with the NCTS Setup at 2:30 P.M. Eastern. The 200-lap event can also be heard live on select affiliates of MRN Radio, along with Sirius NASCAR Radio Channel 128.
