SETZER: Dodged Wrecks for Eighth Place Finish at Bristol

After a disappointing finish at another concrete track two weeks ago in Nashville Crew Chief Marcus Richmond brought the best Tahoe Dodge chassis in the shop to Bristol Motor Speedway looking for redemption.

After Setzer posted the fastest time in the first practice and qualified eighth for the 16th race of the season the decision proved to be the right one. The Tahoe Dodge developed a persistent tight condition early into the event, but didn't stop Setzer from scoring the team's sixth top-10 finish of the year by coming home in eighth position.

For the second consecutive race Setzer posted the fastest time in the first practice on Wednesday morning. After going out late in qualifying Setzer posted the eighth fastest time with a speed of 122.349mph.

"The truck is tight," said Setzer, while still running eighth, during the first caution on lap 10 for an accident in turn two.

The caution flag waved again on lap 41 for a wreck in turn one. Setzer hit pit road for service for the first time all night. The Tahoe Racing Team jumped into action made a track bar adjustment to fix the tight condition and added fuel. Setzer restarted in the 11th spot.

Another caution came out several laps later for an accident in turn two. The lead pack hit pit road and Setzer elected to stay out. He moved into the fifth position just before the restart on lap 64. Over the next 10 laps the Tahoe Dodge once again developed the tight condition causing Setzer to lose several positions.

The fourth of 12 cautions came out on lap 80 for an accident on the front stretch. Richmond made the call to bring Setzer down pit road for service once again. The Tahoe Racing Team changed all four tires, added fuel and put a rubber in the right rear to aid the persistent tight condition.

"The right front tire was blistered to the cord," radioed Richmond to Setzer following the pit stop. "That explains why you lost track position during the last run."  Setzer restarted 16th.

By lap 120 Setzer had moved to 11th spot, but was still battling the tight condition. The next caution came out on lap 147 for a wreck in turn two. Setzer had moved into 10th position, but Richmond once again made the call to bring him down pit road.

"I think fresh tires are going to be big at the end of the race," said Richmond. The Tahoe Racing Team cranked out a fast pit stop changing right side tires and adding fuel. Setzer restarted 21st. "It is about the same, but the bottom lane seems to be coming in more," Setzer radioed in while running 14th on lap 175.

A multi-truck wreck on lap 179 forced NASCAR to Red Flag the event for several minutes. When the race restarted Setzer moved into the 11th position.

The old saying "cautions breed cautions" proved to be true in the final laps of the event. A total of three cautions waved in the final 19 laps. Setzer used his veteran driving skills to dodge the wrecks in the closing laps and bring the Tahoe Dodge home in eighth spot. It was the team's sixth top-10 finish of the season.

Kyle Busch won the O'Reilly 200. Todd Bodine finished second, Scott Speed, Johnny Benson, and Rick Crawford followed in the top five.
