COMPTON: Crash Causes Early Retirement at Bristol
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

It is a well known fact that when the lights come on at Bristol Motor Speedway the action rises, and Dodge Driver Stacy Compton got caught up in that action when another competitor wrecked in front of him. Compton raced in the top 10 but a loose in tight off condition caused him to lose spots in the event.  While in the 18th spot a fellow competitor spun in turn two causing a melee behind him. Everyone started to check up, Compton was trying to creep past when he was hit from behind and pushed into another truck. The radiator and power steering pump busted forcing Compton to retire from the event. He finished 31st.

Once the green flag dropped Compton, who started 19th, used the bottom lane to move his way through traffic. "It is not bad," said Compton during the opening laps. "It is a tick free on entry and a tick tight on exit."

The second caution waved on lap 41 for an accident in turn one. Compton hit pit road for service. The Dodge Racing Team changed right side tires and added fuel. He restarted 11th.

Over the next 20 laps Compton held his own in 11th place as he still battled the loose in and tight off condition. "Make sure you conserve fuel," said Crew Chief Charlie Wilson.

The fourth caution of the night waved on lap 80. Wilson elected to leave Compton out and gain valuable track position. He restarted 10th. The tight condition persisted as the laps ticked away.

Another caution came out on lap 103 for an accident in turn one. Compton hit pit road for service while running 10th. The Dodge Racing team changed all four tires, added fuel and made a track bar adjustment while other teams elected to take only two tires or fuel only. He restarted 21st.

"It is starting to tighten up again," said Compton while running 18th. And in typical Bristol fashion, the melee was just around the corner. On lap 125 a fellow competitor got loose in turn two causing a multi-truck pile up behind him. Compton was almost through the wreck when a fellow competitor rear ended the No. 4 Dodge Ram sending him behind the wall for repairs.

The CGJohnsoncity.com Racing Team tried to fix the damage, but a busted radiator and power steering pump forced them to retire from the event. Compton was credited with the 31st place finishing position.

Kyle Busch won the O'Reilly 200. Todd Bodine finished second, Scott Speed, Johnny Benson, and Rick Crawford followed in the top five.
