COMPTON: Left the Victim of Circumstance at ORP
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

At the end of the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series event at O'Reilly Raceway Park, the No. 4 Wabash Valley Chrysler Dodge resembled more characteristics of a demolition derby entry than it did a NCTS Dodge Ram. It was not the night driver Stacy Compton had envisioned.

After qualifying 20th for the 14th race of the season Compton used his veteran skills to work his way through race traffic. He was running 21st when he entered turn three, running the inside line two-wide.  Another competitor ducked in the mixed making it a slugfest with Compton left the victim of circumstance. Compton received major front end damage. He came down pit road and the No. 4 Dodge Racing Team fixed the truck on three separate trips down pit road. Compton returned to the track in 29th position one lap down to the leader. He was able to rebound in the final laps to finish 23rd.

In the first practice, Compton posted the second fastest time on the time sheet.  He averaged fourth overall in the session.  Then during qualifying his race truck was loose which resulted in a 20th place starting position for the evening's event.

Once the green flag waved Compton was able to use the outside lane to jump up two spots to 18th by lap five.

On lap 39 he radioed in to interim Crew Chief Charlie Wilson, "It is plowing in really bad," said Compton while running 18th. Wilson advised him to turn off his rear bead blower to help the truck turn better.

The second caution waved on lap 86 for a spin in turn four. "I am loose everywhere," Compton said while under caution. Wilson brought Compton down pit for service. The Dodge Racing Team jumped into action changed all four tires, added fuel and made a wedge adjustment before Compton went back on his way. He restarted 21st.

Compton was makeing his way around traffic when calamity happened in turn three. Compton held the No. 4 Wabash Valley Chrysler Dodge on the inside line when he entered the corner.  Another competitor chose to make it three wide. The move didn't quite work out as planned when the other truck hit Compton and pushed him into the vehicle on his outside.  Two of them ended up in the wall sliding down the straightaway.

Once Compton was able to re-fire his Dodge Ram he made his way down pit road. The Dodge Racing Team jumped into action with baseball bats and duct tape in hand to repair the damage. It took three trips down pit road to fix the front end of the mangled truck but the team managed to only lose one lap despite the challenging circumstances. Compton returned to the track in 29th position.

In the final laps Compton was able to stay out of trouble and climb to a 23rd finishing position.

Johnny Benson won the Power Stroke Diesel 200. Ron Hornaday Jr. finished second, Erik Darnell, Matt Crafton, and Shelby Howard followed in the top five.
