HORNADAY: Strong Runner-Up Finish at ORP Indy
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

Ron Hornaday and the Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) No. 33 VFW Chevrolet Silverado team scored their seventh top-five of the year with a runner-up finish in the Power Stroke Diesel on Saturday night at O'Reilly Raceway Park at Indianapolis (ORP). Hornaday, who gained one position in the NASCAR Truck Series point standings to second, led 153 of the 200 laps but had to settle for a second-place finish behind Johnny Benson.

"We had a really good truck Friday night," Hornaday said. "The VFW Chevrolet Silverado didn't fall off, Johnny Benson just got better. It's just frustrating; we really wanted to win this one for VFW. But I am very proud of these guys on the No. 33 VFW Chevrolet team. They did an awesome job and worked hard all day on this truck. It's a shame though; this team really needs another win."

After starting the race from the fourth position, Hornaday took the lead for the first time on lap four and led the next 82 laps until making his only pit stop of the race on lap 86 after the second caution of the race came when Brian Scott spun in turn four. Crew chief Rick Ren called Hornaday down pit road for four tires and fuel. Benson edged him coming off of pit road and Hornaday restarted from the second position on lap 90.

Hornaday wasted no time taking the number one spot back from Benson on the restart and took the lead for the second time on lap 91. He led the next 63 laps and was pulling away from the field when the caution came out on lap 154. Hornaday continued to lead when the race was restarted on lap 157.

On lap 162, Hornaday dropped to the second position after Benson made a pass for the lead out of turn two. The caution came out for the final time with three laps to go after Michael Annette spun in turn four, meaning Hornaday would get one more chance to get a run on Benson and win the race. The race was restarted on lap 198 and Hornaday drove hard into turn one and was able to pull up to Benson's door, but did not have the grip he needed to complete the pass. Hornaday made one last attempt to pass Benson going into turn three on the final lap, but had to settle into the second spot as the two raced to the checkered flag.
