Hornaday Takes Pole in Kansas
Reigning NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Champion Ron Hornaday Jr. claimed the pole for tonight's O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at Kansas Speedway.
Hornaday nailed his qualifying lap at the 1.5-mile superspeedway, running 170.460 miles per hour in his KHI-owned No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado. The pole run was Hornaday's third in five NCTS races this season, all of them coming at intermediate tracks. He now has 16 poles in his NCTS career.
Chevrolets dominated the proceedings during time trails, with four Silverados among the top five, including Chad McCumbee, who will start alongside Hornaday on the outside of Row 1. McCumbee matched his career-best start and was the only driver besides Hornaday to crack the 170 mph barrier in qualifying, turning a lap of 170.213 mph in the No. 8 Malcolmson Construction Silverado.
Hornaday's KHI teammate Jack Sprague, who was on the pole at the last race at Martinsville Speedway, made it three Chevys in the top three spots, as he qualified at 169.801 mph in the No. 2 American Commercial Lines Silverado.
The lone non-Chevy to qualify in the top five was Bobby East, who had an excellent run in the Zaxby's 09 Ford F-150, turning a lap of 169.199 mph. East is filling in for Travis Kvapil, who was busy down in Talladega Superspeedway, where he was qualifying his Yates Racing Ford Fusion.
Rookie Marc Mitchell made it four Silverados in the top five, as he had his first-ever NCTS top-five qualifying run, going 169.131 mph in the No. 15 Ergon Inc. Chevrolet.
Next came Colin Braun in the No. 6 Con-way Freight Ford, his Roush-Fenway Racing teammate Erik Darnell in the No. 99 Northern Tool + Equipment F-150.
Rounding out the top 10 were three Toyotas: Rookie Scott Speed in the No. 22 Red Bull Racing Tundra, Terry Cook's No. 60 AutismSpeaks.Org/Wyler.com entry and 2006 NCTS champ Todd Bodine in the No. 30 Lumber Liquidators entry.
Tonight's O'Reilly Auto Parts 250 is scheduled for 6 p.m. EST.
