MUSGRAVE: Looking for Lady Luck at Kansas
Ted Talks About Racing At Kansas: "I really like racing at tracks like
Kansas. It's a 1.5-mile track with just the right amount of banking. The turns
are more sweeping than some of the other tracks and that lets you really carry a
lot more speed. It's really fast, you can do some passing, you can do some
drafting, and you can really race hard.
"We've always been competitive out there but it's another one of those tracks
that we've never had that last little bit of luck that put us in victory lane."
What Did the Team Do to Prepare for Kansas During the Break After
Martinsville? "We went up and tested at Pocono last week. We took my
favorite truck, the one we ran at California and Atlanta and spent a lot of time
working on some things that I think will help us out at Kansas."
Do You Notice the Speed at Kansas? "It's not something you think
about from a driver's perspective. There is just the right amount of banking
there. Since you carry so much speed it is a real momentum track. It's smooth
and wide with a lot of room to race. That's probably why you don't notice the
speed so much is there is just so much room out there."
What's Different Racing at Kansas in April versus July?
"When we first went out to Kansas in 2001 it was in July. The track was really
dark and brand new and had a ton of grip. Now that the track has aged, it's lost
some of that grip from when the asphalt was new. But we now race there in April
when it is 25 degrees cooler so even though the track is older there is the same
level of grip. The actual track conditions haven't changed from the driver's
seat.
I remember that first race there in 2001. Our truck had a black hood and fenders
and the back half of it was white. It was about 103 degrees. We had a great shot
to win that one but it was so hot that the fuel was starting to boil in the fuel
lines. My teammate Scott Riggs and I were the only ones not to have any air or
anything blowing in on us. We really toughed it out that day. But the next year
we went back with the paint scheme reversed, the hood and fenders were white and
the back of the truck was black. But wouldn't you know it, it turned out that it
was a lot cooler that time around."
Ted Musgrave's Kansas Speedway Stats:
Musgrave has participated in all seven previous NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series
races at Kansas Speedway. His best finish was in the inaugural race at the
1.5-mile tri-oval in 2001 when he finished second to the late Ricky Hendrick.
Musgrave followed that performance with a fifth-place run in 2002. While those
two runs are his only top-ten finishes, he has qualified among the top ten in
all seven races and has finished on the lead lap in five of his seven starts. He
has led 70 laps in four races. His average start is 6.0 and his average finish
is 14.3.
Notes of Interest:
Ted will be making his 178th career start in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series
and his 505th start overall in NASCAR's top three series. He is just over
$100,000 away from breaking the $5 Million winnings barrier in the NASCAR
Craftsman Truck Series - a feat only accomplished by three other drivers in the
history of the series.
