COOK: Martinsville Pre-Race Report
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

Terry Cook on Racing at Martinsville: "When they resurfaced the track here they really changed the style of racing at Martinsville. On the old surface, when they diamond cut the bottom groove they created a second groove up top and you could really race side by side. On the new surface, it's a bottom feeder track. The bottom groove is by far the place you want to be. That means you ride around single file and the only real good way to get around someone is to move them out of the way. That's really not my style. It's one thing if you are considerably faster and someone is blocking you. More often than not, someone will do it when they are just a tick faster than you and can't complete the pass. I don't like racing that way."

Terry Cook on His Last Race at Martinsville: "We thought we had a truck that could win, but we didn't qualify that well. We had to use pit strategy to get to the front and our strategy was to not pit at all. It worked and it got us to the front but we weren't able to hold off the guys behind us."

Cook led 108 of the 200 laps in last fall's Kroger 200.

Terry Cook on Tires at Martinsville: "I think the tire we use at Martinsville is a good, durable tire. It's not really the reason you see all the single-file racing there. It might be a little better if the tires fell off after 50 laps and you had to make multiple pit stops. As it is now, you race Martinsville like you do a road course race: you work backwards from the finish and as soon as you can get to the end on fuel you pit and that's it because the tires don't go away."

Terry Cook Atlanta Recap: "We had a great truck at California so we really thought we'd be good at Atlanta. It was a good run for us, but I really thought we would have a shot to get up and fight for the win. That's our goal, to get checkered flags and win races, so even though it was a good race for us we still came away with a little disappointment."

Terry Cook's Short Track Career: Cook has made 82 career short track starts in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series. He has collected two short track wins: Flemington, N.J., on August 8, 1998 and Indianapolis on August 2, 2002. Cook has nine career top-five finishes and 23 top-ten finishes in short track competition, and has earned four pole positions. He has led 514 laps on tracks under one mile in length, and has an average start of 14.6 and an average finish of 17.3.

Terry Cook NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series Results:  Martinsville Speedway: Terry Cook has 15 previous starts at Martinsville Speedway. Cook has five career top-ten finishes at Martinsville, including a career-best third in April 2001. He finished in the top ten in both races in 2005, coming home 10th in April and 7th in October. He drove to a 15th-place finish last April, and led 108 laps last October before involvement in a late-race incident left him 29th at the finish. Cook has paced the field for a total of 190 laps - including 108 laps in the fall race last season at the paperclip track. Cook has completed 98.5% of the possible laps at Martinsville in his career.  He has also amassed the sixth most drivers' points in the last ten NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races at Martinsville Speedway.
