TEAM NEWS: Setzer and Compton Top Two-Day Test at Martinsville
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

Despite running over a combined 9,000 laps of NASCAR competition at Martinsville Speedway, Bobby Hamilton Racing teammates Stacy Compton (No. 4 Dodge) and Dennis Setzer (No. 18 Dodge) realize the importance of the recent NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series test at Martinsville Speedway over the past two days.

"No matter how hard you try you will never be able to master Martinsville Speedway," said Dennis Setzer, who currently sits eighth in the NCTS series point standings. "This Track changes way too much to master it. It used to be a bumpy track several years ago and was really rough to race on. Then they ground the bottom groove which I think was one of the best things they ever decided to do with the track. It helped smooth out the surface and made for great racing. Now the track has been reconfigured again. It has the most grip ever. But just as soon as you think you have this place figured out something else changes."

Virginia native Stacy Compton, who joined the newly-relocated BHRVA this season, says testing in the team's backyard can provide a slight advantage.

"The testing schedule in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is very limited at the tracks we actually race. So I think when they choose a track for us they try to make sure it is one a team can get a lot out of," Compton said. "I don't think your average race fans realize how much a test can cost a team. It is really just another race weekend because you have to pay for travel, a place for the crews to stay and you have to pay to test at each track. For us to be able to test right down the road from our shop we were able to sleep in our own beds and capitalize on being so close to home."

Compton believes this week's test will prove beneficial not only for the two races at the speedway, but others on the schedule as well.

"Not only will we gain knowledge for the races here, but what we learned the past two days will carry onto Mansfield, Milwaukee, Memphis and even Phoenix late in the season," said Compton. "On top of that we have had the chance to spend two days figuring out what not to do once we arrive at the track for the race. When you are able to test at a track and apply the knowledge you learn to that many tracks, it makes all the hard work worthwhile."

Setzer posted an over-all time of 19.949 seconds (94.922 miles per hour) followed by Compton's 20.016 seconds (94.604 miles per hour) during the two-day test. The next event for the NCTS will be held at Martinsville Speedway on March 29, 2008.
