Team MRD had high hopes coming into the second Nascar Craftsman Truck race in 2008 at California. Chad McCumbee was second fastest in happy hour on Thursday night and was a contender for a front row start on Saturday's running of the San Bernadino County 200. Unfortunately, qualifying was rained out on Friday which relegated the #8 truck to a 27th place starting position from 2007 owner's points.
With lots of rain in the area, the green flag flew on schedule Saturday afternoon. Chad was able to drive the MRD Motorsports Silverado forward, but quickly had major and unexpected handling issues. The truck continued to have problems throughout the race while the team made major adjustments on each pit stop. The MRD guys never gave up and had the truck back in competitive form by race's end. "We really struggled to start with and wasn't able to charge up through the field like I felt we could," McCumbee commented. Chad was able to drive up as high as 13th with the less than perfect truck, but after a late cycle of green flag pit stops, he ended up taking the checkered flag in 18th. "I was very surprised we weren't a contender as good as we were in practice. We found some major problems after the race but we still have to figure out how it all happened."
The Nascar Craftsman Truck Series has a week off before the next event at Atlanta Motor Speedway. MRD Motorsports will be preparing for Atlanta and starting to work on their short track trucks as Martinsville approaches. "We should be able to find out what went wrong this weekend as we analyze it at the shop and we be back and prepared to contend for the win in Atlanta," stated McCumbee.
