Coming off the team's first-ever Daytona victory, Germain Racing and driver Todd Bodine have momentum heading into the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series' second race of the season, 2.0-mile California Speedway in Fontana, Cal. California is the home of Germain Racing's first win in 2004 and it's a track where the team has had strong performances. Look for Bodine and Germain Racing to be part of the action up front in Saturday's San Bernardino County 200.
"We've always run well at California Speedway. I've run well there even before racing in the Truck Series - it's just a track that suits our team and my style," said Bodine. "The Lumber Liquidators Tundra was very strong at California last year. With our Daytona win, we're bringing some momentum, but we need to stay focused on being in the mode of racing up front and turning in dominant performances like we know we are capable of."
In last year's California race, the battle among the top-ten trucks was tight. Bodine finished seventh, and learned some important lessons that put his finish up to second when the team moved into race number three at Atlanta. This year's race will be like a new event.
"For California, handling is obviously a major key. You've gotta have a fast truck and it has to handle well," said Bodine. "In the Truck Series this year, we'll run tapered spacer, means you have to be the driver that can hold the truck wide open into the corners the longest if you want to be the fastest. It will be a different California, but we think the Lumber Liquidators Tundra will be ready for it."
Crew chief Mike Hillman Jr. said the tapered spacer paired with the reduced fuel cell will change strategy at California and beyond.
"We're running a fuel cell that's 4 gallons less than anything we've run before. At a 2-mile track, fuel mileage will be crucial. You have to change your strategy as far as when you put two tires on, or four, or just gas because you're window is so much smaller and there's less room for error," said Mike Hillman Jr. "The biggest fear is getting the Lumber Liquidators Tundra caught in a green flag pit stop when a caution comes out - similar to what happened with the season finale at Homestead. The spacer and fuel cell definitely put the focus on team strategy and team work. We have to be on our game all race long."
