TEAM NEWS: Cunningham/Hartman/Scherer Motorsports announce NCTS Team for '08
Cunningham Motorsports team owner, Kerry Scherer, announced today that the
newly formed entity of CHS Motorsports will compete in the NASCAR Craftsman
Truck Series for the 2008 season. Owners, Briggs Cunningham, Carl Hartman and
Kerry Scherer will carry the Dodge Motorsports banner in the NCTS. The race team
is located in Lexington, North Carolina and Scherer, a top competitor in the
ARCA REMAX Series, will partner with Cunningham and Hartman to field Dodge Rams
in the series this year. The formation of the CHS Motorsports NCTS team will
allow for additional growth and opportunities for young drivers graduating from
the Cunningham Motorsports Official Dodge Driver development program. CHS
Motorsports joined forces in October 2007 with Ganassi Racing and driver Dario
Franchitti in what was to become Franchitti's first ever start in a NASCAR
event.
Cunningham Motorsports, led by Kerry Scherer, has been very successful over the
years with its driver development program, using the ARCA REMAX Series as a
beginning for young drivers. "The addition of our NCTS team can provide a
valuable stepping stone in the development of a driver's career.
We started out with this concept of helping evaluate and prepare drivers for a
long career in auto racing. However, with the influx of new drivers coming from
other series, particularly open wheel, I felt that if we had a couple more years
working with these young drivers we could enable them to be better prepared for
a stronger competitive series", said Scherer.
Co-owner, Carl Hartman, is a distinguished racing veteran that has an abundance
of knowledge essential for the driver development program. Carl has experience
working with young drivers as well as some of the great veterans in ASA, ARCA
and NASCAR over the years. "This is going to be a very exciting team concept for
us. Kerry and I have become great friends through Cunningham Motorsports and I
have grown a tremendous respect for what they have been able to accomplish in
that program. They have a really good group of guys and experience from which to
draw led by respected veteran racer, Mark Gibson. CHS Motorsports will be able
to provide that next step from the ARCA REMAX Racing Series while providing
continuity in development and training for these talented drivers looking to
continue career advancement opportunities. Our program will provide the
stability these drivers need as they concentrate on learning all aspects of
motor sports competition instead of worrying a!
bout the next step of their racing careers. And while driver development will be
somewhat of a theme for us, we will look forward to working with some
experienced drivers as well who can provide the feedback necessary to keep us in
balance with technology advances that ultimately benefit the competitiveness of
our race team", said Hartman.
Barry Owen has been busy building the (10) 2008 Dodge Rams that will be used
this upcoming season, and which will be powered by ILMOR engines. Barry has been
involved in each of the NASCAR Series for 35 years. Owen will oversee the day to
day operations at the race facility and is busy making preparations in order to
kick off the 2008 season.
The team is currently seeking sponsorship and drivers for the 2008 season.
Cunningham Motorsports has rapidly expanded their operations for the Dodge
Driver development program in 2008. In addition to ARCA Champion Frank Kimmel
and USAC standout Taylor Malsam piloting the ARCA REMAX Series teams in
competition for 2008, CMS has also stepped up involvement in USAC Series as part
of the driver development programs already instituted for up and coming drivers.
