TOYOTA NOTES: Daytona Preseason Thunder Test at Daytona, Day 1/AM Session
MIKE SKINNER, No. 5 Toyota Tundra, Bill Davis Racing
What is your mindset heading into the Daytona test and the new season?
"We just need to get things going. We chose to bring a little different
package down here to Daytona this year. We have a little more down force, and
our truck is not as slick as some of the other guys, but we're okay. We're just
having fun."
What does the team need to do to compete for the championship again in
2008? "We need to keep working hard and have a little bit of luck. We
had some luck at the beginning of last year, but lost some of that towards the
end of the season. We brought a truck here to try to win the race, not just to
qualify at the front. The Bill Davis Racing guys are putting in some good work,
and we are looking for another good season in 2008."
DAVID STARR, No. 11 Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra, Red Horse Racing
How does it feel to get back with Red Horse Racing in 2008?
"It really feels like I came home. When I found out late in the season last year
that I was coming back to this Red Horse Racing team and Toyota, I couldn't
believe it. Working for Tom DeLoach and Jeff Hammond (team owners) and Jamie
Jones (crew chief) is so much fun, and the guys on this team are some of the
hardest working guys in racing. They showed last year that they can put a top-10
truck on the track every race, no matter the driver, and I'm excited about
that."
What are the team's goals this season? "I want to get to Homestead
in November with a shot at the championship. We finished fourth in points in
2006 with this team and we were able to win a race, so I think we can improve
from that. We struggled a bit on the mile-and-a- half tracks that year, but
Jamie (Jones) says he's got some things figured out where we'll be a lot more
competitive on those. I think that we'll be running near the front throughout
the season. I'd like to win a handful of races and be in the hunt for the
championship."
MIKE HILLMAN JR., Crew Chief, No. 30 Lumber Liquidators Tundra, Germain Racing
What happened that delayed the team's arrival in Daytona? "We
planned on flying here early this morning, but we found out late last night that
there was a problem with the landing gear on our plane. It put us a couple of
hours behind. With Daytona being an impound race, it's not a big deal to miss
the single-truck runs. We're ready to get drafting this afternoon in our Tundra,
and that's what is important to us."
Note: Part of the Germain Racing team was scheduled to arrive in time for the
morning session, but did not arrive until 11:30 a.m. due to plane troubles.
