| TRACK NEWS: Michigan Truck Race Named 'Cool City Customs 200'
01-05-2008 | TruckSeries.com Report
Cool City Customs, a Michigan-based motorcycle customs shop, will sponsor the Cool City Customs 200 at Michigan International Speedway on June 14. It will be the first NASCAR sponsorship of any kind for the Lyons, Mich., company that specializes in the customizing and selling of many of the extravagant motorcycles on the road today. The three-year sponsorship deal for the Cool City Customs 200 will extend through 2010. The sponsorship also makes Cool City Customs the "Official Custom Bike Builder" of Michigan International Speedway. "This is a tremendous opportunity for Cool City Customs to make in-roads with our NASCAR fans," track President Roger Curtis said. "This is a unique sponsorship in that we've never had a motorcycle business sponsor a race here at MIS. It is a natural fit that will give Cool City Customs some great benefits in helping their business grow." "I am so excited that Cool City Customs will be the sponsor of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series race at MIS in 2008 and beyond," Cool City Customs owner Bill Hattan said. "We feel many of our bike customers are NASCAR fans so this only made sense when the opportunity came about." Hattan suffered a near-fatal accident in 2002 when a car traveling 80 mph struck him in a construction zone where he was working. One of his co-workers was killed in the same incident, but Hattan managed to survive through a 45-day coma and the loss of his legs (he now wears prosthetics). An accident of this nature affects people differently. It charted a new life course for Hattan and led to the opening of Cool City Customs in 2005. "Opening this shop was a dream come true for me because I am such a motorcycle enthusiast," Hattan said. "I've had to go through many hardships in my life since 2002, but I've managed to overcome a great deal and create this bike shop, which has been great thus far. Activating this partnership with MIS will put us on the map nationally and regionally, which I'm very excited about." Cool City Customs has become one of the nation's premier motorcycle custom shops. The shop announced in September its Legend Series brand with the backing of legendary and local boxing great Thomas "The Hitman" Hearns. "My decision to team up with Cool City Customs is due to the dedication Mr. Hattan has for his company along with the innovative and state-of-the-art designs they have created for the bike enthusiast," Hearns said. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series races at MIS features some of the best racing the series has to offer. With speeds exceeding 180 mph, the NCTS has become quite a fan favorite since joining the MIS schedule in 1999. Last June, Travis Kvapil made a late-race pass of Kyle Busch to earn his second career truck win at the two-mile oval. With many Sprint Cup regulars battling the seasoned veterans, the Cool City Customs 200 will be a must-see event in 2008.
