NASCAR drivers are taking on their counterparts from the NHRA in the 3rd Annual Chevy Geoff Bodine Bobsled Challenge, presented by Whelen Engineering, January 3-5 at the Olympic Sports Complex.
The Bodine Bobsled Challenge features two distinct, separate races on Saturday, January 5. The first race, at 9:30 am, features all of the drivers taking two runs down the world-renowned bobsled track on Mount Van Hoevenberg. The lowest combined time for the two-man teams - comprised of either a NASCAR or NHRA driver as the pilot and a New York State Army National Guardsman as the brakeman - will decide the winner of Race 1.
In Race 2, starting at 1:30 pm, the drivers will be split into two groups - those from NASCAR against those from NHRA. It will be like an NHRA race - each side will have five drivers competing in head-to-head racing. The final heat will feature the top NASCAR driver against the top NHRA driver, with the winner claiming gold.
The drivers on the NASCAR side include: 2006 Craftsman Truck Series Champion Todd Bodine; the 2007 Craftsman Truck Series Champion and three-time champion Ron Hornaday, Jr.; NASCAR Whelen All-American Series National Champion Steve Carlson; NASCAR Grand National Busch East Series Champion Joey Logano; NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour Champion Donny Lia; NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour Champion L.W. Miller; NASCAR Nextel Cup driver and three-race Bodine Challenge winner Boris Said; and NASCAR Craftsman Truck series third place finisher and Most Popular Driver Johnny Benson.
The NHRA side is led by Top Fuel driver and Bodine Bobsled Challenge silver medalist Morgan Lucas; 2006 Top Fuel Rookie of the year and previous Bodine Bobsled Challenge competitor J.R. Todd; and three time POWERade Pro Stock Champion Jeg Coughlin, Jr., who also set an NHRA record by winning national events in four separate classes - Super Gas, Super Stock, Comp, and Pro Stock in 1997.
Heat 1 features all 10 drivers taking a run down the track. The two drivers with the slowest time from each group will be eliminated from further competition.
Heat 2 consists of the top driver on each side getting a bye into the next round, while the remaining drivers go down the track once again. The slowest sled from each side is eliminated and the rest move on to Heat 3.
Heat 3 has the two sleds that received the bye from Heat 1 plus the two remaining sleds from Heat 2. At the end of Heat 3, the slowest sled from each time will be eliminated, leaving the final two sleds to go head-to-head in Heat 4.
