TOYOTA NOTES: Silverado 350K at Texas Qualifying Review
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

MIKE SKINNER, No. 5 Toyota Tundra, Bill Davis Racing - Starting position: 1st  This is Skinner's 10th pole position this season, tying his 1995 NCTS record for most poles in a single season.  How was your qualifying lap?  "Our Tundra was real good right off the trailer.  We didn't really know if it was going to be a pole contender or not.  I feel like this truck will race good and it has raced good here.  We've raced well here at Texas Motor Speedway.  I always enjoy coming here and we have a lot of friends here.  It's neat -- it's just a lot of fun.  I sure hope we are sitting here tomorrow night."

How much have bonus points played a part in your championship quest this year?  "It's a huge deal.  Obviously, it is part of what kept us alive.  We had a front tire blow out earlier in the season and it cost us a nice comfortable lead.  When we've had mulligans -- when we've had problems -- Ronnie (Hornaday) seemed to finish in the top-five.  That's made it awfully hard on us.  If it wasn't for the bonus points, we probably would be way further down than we are now.  I would really love to pick up five points for leading and the bonus points for winning tomorrow.  Right now at this point in time, this thing (championship battle) is so tight that we keep going back and forth.  We had it after Martinsville and then he got it last week (at Atlanta).  Hopefully, it will keep going that way and we'll get it back by four or five points this week and he'll take it back at Phoenix next week.  Then, we'll get it back at Homestead.  That's what we are hoping for."

TED MUSGRAVE, No. 9 Team ASE Toyota Tundra, Germain Racing - Starting position: 3rd
How was your qualifying lap?  "Our lap was pretty uneventful, which is good.  The Tundra drove really good -- probably the best truck I've had as far as driving-wise wise and stuff.  I even came across the radio after my lap and I said it must be slow because it drove so well and they said no, you're actually third quickest.  It drove incredibly nice and I can't wait until tomorrow.  If it runs this well now we'll be in good shape for the race tomorrow.  We've always run well here but we've never had a win.  Gosh, I hope tomorrow is a good night for us and we can do it."

How have the crew changes on your team affected you recently?  "We had a crew chief change and he came in and redesigned the trucks a little bit differently.  They are driving really, really well.  Maybe we learned something new.  Like I said, we've never had a truck drive this well here.  Mike Abner has done a fantastic job stepping in and taking over the reigns.  Now it's a whole new ball game."

JOHNNY BENSON, No. 23 Toyota Certified Used Vehicles Toyota Tundra, Bill Davis Racing - Starting position: 4th  How was your qualifying lap? "Our lap was good -- I was excited about that.  We weren't that good in practice so we made a bunch of changes.  Right there at the end we kept getting better and better.  The changes the team made and the guys worked hard on our Tundra and I was happy.  I love racing here at Texas.  The problem is that the last two times we came here we were running second and broke.  It would be great to win this weekend."
