WOOD: Marks 100th Career Start at Texas
Jon Wood isn't ready to pay attention to milestones. After all, he believes
there's still a lot of racing ahead of him.
But Friday night's Silverado 350 at the Texas Motor Speedway is significant
because he will become only the 13th driver in series history with at least 100
career starts. Coincidentally, Wood Brothers/JTG Racing teammate Stacy Compton
was the 12th driver to make the list earlier this year.
More important to Wood is the success of the No. 21 Bush's Baked Beans Ford
F-150. That truck has been one of the best in the sport during the summer
months, and Wood wants to take it to the next level - victory. Wood has shared
the driving duties with Mark Martin this year, and together they've posted nine
Top-10 finishes in just 14 starts.
Texas is one of Wood's favorites. He loves speed, and he likes a racetrack where
the driver plays an important role in the truck's success. Texas requires a lot
of skill with the accelerator and brakes, especially in the 24-degree-banked
corners, and that plays in Wood's favor.
WHAT THE TEAM HAS TO SAY
Jon Wood, Driver of the No. 21 Bush's Baked Beans Ford F-150:
"It's nice this will be my 100th career start in the truck series, but my main
focus is winning another race," he said. "This Ford F-150 has been incredible
all year. Mark Martin finished fourth with it last week at Atlanta, and we both
think the truck's on the verge of breaking through for a win.
"There will be a time when I look back at what I've accomplished in this sport.
The 100 career starts will be important then. But I have a lot more starts left
in me. I just turned 25 last week, so I still have a lot of goals in front of
me. The first is to get this No. 21 truck in Victory Lane. Those are the kind of
milestones that will be important to me when I'm older."
John Monsam, Crew Chief of the No. 21 Bush's Baked Beans Ford F-150:
"Mark Martin gave this truck a real workout at Atlanta last week and we were one
adjustment away from probably being able to run for the win," he said. "We've
made that last adjustment, so we should be really good when we unload for
practice at Texas. The good thing about running tracks like Atlanta and Texas
back-to-back is if you have a good truck at Atlanta, it's easier to carry that
momentum over to Texas."
