For fledgling NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series competitor Brian Scott, every weekend brings a new test and so far so good. After two recent steady runs at Martinsville and Atlanta, Scott is now ready to take on the tricky challenge of Texas Motor Speedway. The TMS circuit will mark the third 1.5 mile intermediate track that Scott has competed on, and he is confident that his learning experiences at Las Vegas and Atlanta will pay big dividends come race time at Texas.
"When I first went out on a mile and a half speedway at Las Vegas I was a little lost," Scott admits. "But we made great strides both in practice and in the race at Atlanta so my confidence at an intermediate track is much higher than before. Hopefully we can unload at Texas with a good truck, qualify well, get a good finish and keep up the momentum we have built up over the past two races."
Scott knows he must try to keep up his recent trend of finishing races. It is an important point of emphasis that crew chief and competition director Dave Fuge constantly drills into his young driver. Fuge has traveled this road before when he captured a NCTS championship with a relatively young Travis Kvapil in 2003.
"You can't learn if you are not on the racetrack," Fuge states. "Brian has done a really good job for the most part of staying out of trouble, logging laps and learning about these racetracks and the competitors in this series. That has been our goal all along for the remainder of this year. We are focusing all our efforts on getting Brian where he needs to be to be competitive in this series. Texas will be another tough step in his learning curve and we need to keep doing what we have been able to do so far -- run the entire race."
