CHEVY POST RACE NOTES: EasyCare 200 at Atlanta
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

Kyle Busch, No. 51 Red Top Auto Auction Silverado scored his first victory of the 2007 season and the sixth win for Silverado in the EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 200 at Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS).

Busch has four wins in 32 previous NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) starts, his last coming at Charlotte in May 2006.  The 22-year old Las Vegas native led four times for a total of 65 laps on his way to victory lane.

Ron Hornaday, Jr., No. 33 Camping World Silverado, finished second and resumed the lead in the NCTS championship point standings by four points with three races remaining on the schedule.

Powered by Earnhardt Childress Racing Technologies horsepower, Hornaday, starting from the pole, led five times during the race for a total of 51 of the 130-lap race.

Matt Crafton, No. 88 Menards/Johns Manville Silverado finished seventh followed by Brendan Gaughan, No. 77 South Point Hotel Silverado, in the eight position. Crafton remains eighth in the standings Gaughan rides in the 13th spot.

The Silverado one-two finish keeps Silverado brand second the 2007 NCTS manufacturers' point standings.

Next race on the schedule for Team Chevy Silverado will be November 2, 2007 at Texas Motor Speedway.

Kyle Busch, No. 51 Red Top Auto Auction Silverado, Started 3rd, Finished 1st: "Whew, finally.  Man this feels good to finally get this Billy Ballew Motorsports Chevy back in victory lane.  We had a really really good truck all day long. We were really strong on the short runs then we would fall off a little bit but not quite as much as everybody else.  Hornaday was really strong all day long and the 23 (Johnny Benson) made some adjustments and they got good there at the end. But we were the best when it counted and it was a good day for Red Top Auto Auction from Georgia and Chevrolet and this whole Billy Ballew team. Flanders Beef Patties has been with us most of this year and we couldn't quite get them a win, but we have to thank them for our support of our program.  Been trying to get it done all year long and today was our day."

Kyle Busch - Post Race Press Conference:

ON HOW ARE IT WAS TO DRIVE HOLDING WINDOW NET UP WITH ONE HAND: "I was about done. I was on about my last couple of laps of being able to hold it up, really. It was pretty difficult to do. Of course it busted loose and I tried pinning it back up and when I tried that, I lost the back of it so the whole thing was out. I was sitting there trying to hold the whole thing up with my left hand. I was trying to hold it up so nobody could really tell, but I wasn't doing a very good job of that cause it flew out a couple of times. I was trying to keep it in the right position to where the wind wouldn't take it and blow it out from where the window was; I kept trying to keep it inside the pane of the windshield there. I was falling back a little bit. I was just too worried about wrecking the truck and too worried about the window net at the same time, so I had a little bit of a challenge there, but my arm was starting to get sore and I couldn't move my hand after I was done with, as soon as that caution came out, I said Thank Gosh and I just dropped the window net, I didn't care. We were able to then come down pit road and get it back up. I wish I had able to get it clipped, cause if I could have done that, we would have probably been ok. Luckily the caution came out and we were able to save our race.

"I don't know why it came lose but we are going to work on our system there a little bit. There are these little balls that are in the piece that squeeze together the lever that goes through there and they are just getting a little worn out. The truck is four or five years old so it has seen its better days but we will get it fixed and get it back out there."

ON SHANE SIEG: "He and I haven't chatted, no, but we have been helping out each other with setup tips and what each other is running. He had a better truck than we did at Loudon so we took some of his notes and used those.  Here he took some of ours and used those. The two trucks is definitely helping our program out a little bit and speeding up the learning curve, getting us closer to the rest of the competitors. We are still pretty close to what we ran two years ago so not being able to learn has been a hindrance and maybe why we haven't been able to run up front as much and finish better and get the wins."

ON WHY HE RUNS IN THE NCTS: "It is great racing and it is fun to be able to go out there and run with these guys. We put on a great race for the fans there before that last caution came out. And it is fun anytime you can do that. There are certain programs that are trying to bring it along and anytime I can race with Billy Ballew, he is a lot of fun. So to be able to go out there and have fun and race for no points, just for fun and for wins, we race to try to win of course every time we come out.  We are limited on funds so we are trying to get back going and back to up where we need to be. It is just a good time, nothing anything special. The track time is good, any time you can get out there and see what the trucks do on the long run and see what I might be able to learn for the Cup race, run the top a little bit. And then run the bottom a little bit and see what is going to go on.

"All the guys on this team work so hard, they work for seven in the morning until eleven at night every day, I swear. It is unbelievable the dedication they put in.

"The No. 15 team and the No. 51 team with Doug George and everybody over there on the No. 15, they have done a great job of helping us out.  Richie (Wauters, crew chief) and I have taken over the No. 51 deal, kind of a start up thing, it has been good. It is kind of a start up deal. All the trucks are the same. We share trucks, there are different truck numbers, you just never know who is going to get which one. I picked two of them for myself and Billy is ok with that. I have picked No. 11 and No. 24, those are my babies. We don't know which one we are going to run next week, but we will figure it out.  I told Richie I would have to think about it."

ON IF HOLDING SAFETY NET UP IS A SAFETY HAZZARD: "Sure, yes. But am I going to come down pit road to fix a window net that I feel like I can hold up and lose track position. Heck, I am not going to come down pit road and try and fix it. If I do that, I lose the race and I am not out there to lose the race. If we would have had to come down pit road under green, we would have just parked it because we would have lost our chance at winning the race, so it was pointless for us to do that. We were just holding on to see if I couldn't get it latched or we couldn't get a caution."

ON HOW LOOSE THE TRUCK WAS DURING THE RACE:  "I always drive a loose truck. I feel like that is the only way I can get my trucks to turn is to just let the rear end do some of the steering. There is so much side force on these things you can let them hang it out there a little bit and they will straighten themselves out. I don't have a problem letting it get out somewhat; it is fun to do that a little bit. It scares the guys behind you out of the throttle so I think it is a good thing."

ON TEAMING WITH BILLY BALLEW AS A TRUCK OWNER:  "I don't have any plans to do this in the near future. I still want to see what NASCAR has going for the truck series and see bigger and better things come out of it and more sponsors jump in and stuff like that. It is just too much of situation now where there just isn't a lot of big name sponsors and it is tough for guys to get sponsors every week and come to the race track, I know it is tough on Billy and the rest of the truck owners, unless you are fully funded by a great sponsor, it is really hard to break even or try to make somewhat of a profit. If I had a sponsor come to me and tell me they had four or five million dollars, I would do it for maybe two or three years. But it is hard to do something for just a year and then not have anything for the following year."

ON PASS FOR LEAD FINAL TIME:  "I just went to the high side and held it wide open to get by them. I was trying to pass Johnny (Benson) there on the bottom and I just couldn't get by him. We kept side drafting each other on the straightaway, slowing each other down. We were actually staying pace with Hornaday so I was kind of proud of that fact, but we just couldn't get clear because we were messing around with each other too much. Finally on that restart, I decided I would go to the top and see what I could get worked out of there. Luckily Johnny gave me some room down the back straightaway, enough along side of him so I could get even with him and I held it wide open three and four and was able to get on the outside of Hornaday, pass him and go on for the win.  It was pretty cool.  I was how I won the last race I won here was going to the high side and being able to get by the guys.  They guys who can hold it to the wood is the man."

ON HOW GOOD THINGS ARE GOING RIGHT NOW:  "Things are going real good right now, I am kind of proud of that. It has been a lot of hard work. It just seems like things are just falling in the right place, things are in order, I am glad to have that, it has been good. I am not sure exactly what has changed, but things are going the right way.  I guess it good to be Kyle Busch and I am kind of proud of it."

ON JACQUES VILLENEUVE: "I didn't see him all day, so he much have been doing a pretty good job. I don't know, I didn't spend enough time around it. For not coming up and lapping him at a place like this that is really really fast and there isn't a lot of grip and you are sliding around is good. If he was racing around other guys and he was racing around them, you can go ask their opinion. To me, I didn't hear anything about him. I didn't watch the race yet, but it seemed fine. Congratulations to them for having a clean day today. He was doing a good job at Martinsville too, he just got dumped. Maybe he will have better luck the rest of the year."

Ron Hornaday, Jr., No. 33 Camping World Silverado, Qualified 1st, Finished 2nd: "He (Kyle Busch) had us the first lap, I was so focused on racing Skinner (Mike). He (Busch) could have got by me but he hung back there a little bit and let it shake out with me and Mike and for me to lead a lap and then he went by. Awesome job today for the whole Camping World and Rvs.com Chevrolet. This is just awesome. All the support we get from Chevrolet.  The hard work from every in the RCR/DEI (Earnhardt Childress Racing Technologies) engine program really showed. They told me they had a good piece for me and they did.  Kevin and DeLana Harvick have given us everything we need and more.

"We did some hard racing out there for sure but our Silverado is in one piece, can you believe that? Ron Hornaday brought a truck home without a scratch. We might take this one next week to Texas. This is just unbelievable. They keep bringing me great trucks week in and week out. In the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series (NCTS) you have to run hard every lap and this proves it. Skinner pitted and look at him, he finished back in the top-five.

"The way we are going to beat him is just to out-race him as hard as we can. We are doing everything we can on our side.

"Any time you can sit on a pole and run second to a guy like that (Busch), it is a great day. He had an awesome Silverado too.  Man, this is fun. This is what racing is all about.

"You know, I hated this race track and I learned how to drive it when the tires wore out. You have to have a truck like Rick Ren (crew chief) gives you. This is a lot of fun racing.

ON TAKING BACK POINTS LEAD BY FOUR POINTS: "That is ok for now, but after Homestead is when I will be jumping up and down. I am sure Skinner will get it back next week and I will try and get it back the week after.  This is what NCTS racing is all about, just having fun and hard racing.

"Hats off to NASCAR and Craftsman. To have to great teams battling and changing the points lead each week is unbelievable. I am so proud of my guys. We were terrible yesterday. It showed good but we were wearing our tires out after 10 laps. Rick Ren and I talked after watching Cup qualifying and we made the right calls and our truck was awesome.

"Kyle Busch, what an awesome Chevrolet teammate. I just asked him if I could lead the first lap. Everybody thinks that is funny but the third place guy can get a good suck off there at the start sometimes.  I got in the corner where I got enough air off of Skinner to stay in front of him. Busch was coming with a full head of stream and I heard him lift and let me lead the first lap. That is why I let him go and lead for a while. I didn't mean to let Skinner go, but he got by me too. Unbelievable day for our Camping World Chevrolet. We only put two tires on, I am not sure who put four on but that two just made us a little too tight at the end."

ON HOW HARD IT IS TO HOLD UP A WINDOW NET UP: "It is almost impossible and he did it, I saw him for almost eight laps. I will tell you what, Kyle Busch is Kyle Busch and that is why he just rode the top and let me go by. He had that thing sideways with one hand; he must have had a knob to be able to do that with one hand. My hat is off to him. I was telling the guys that hey, his window net is down, he is holding me up. I have to passed him. He hit the yellow at the right time, but he must have done it for eight or ten laps."

Matt Crafton, No. 88 Menards/Johns Manville Silverado, Qualified 12th, Finished 7th: "Pretty good, solid day for us.  On that last pit stop, some guys took two tires and we took four and came out, I don't know, 14th or something. So we had to drive our way back up through there. I think we had a top-five truck easy but just didn't have the track position we needed to get there. Looking forward to Texas and then Phoenix, those are two of my favorite tracks."

Brendan Gaughan, No. 77 South Point Hotel Silverado, Qualified 23rd, Finished 8th: "A great day for Chevrolet - Ron Hornaday pulled away and got the points lead. I tried to helping him out by getting by (Mike) Skinner, but we just couldn't quite get him. I think we were faster. I think that Chevrolet had the best pieces out there today. We had one that I think was a top five piece, but we ended up eighth with it - coming from 23rd. The battle we had on pit road was a struggle because we had to get in and out of the pits with guys on the lead lap in the wrong order, too. We had the guy that we had to pull around always in front of us on the race track and the guy that we had to pull out around was behind us. It makes for a real difficult night on pit road for the boys. I ended up clipping a guy on the 27 team - he was OK -smart guys on that 27 team. We were able to make it out but I knocked the tire out of his hand.

"We battled all day. Bryan Berry (crew chief) threw the kitchen sink at it this morning when we pulled into the race track. I'm not going to say all the things he changed just because I don't think anybody would believe us. Byran Berry is just one of my heroes tonight. And my spotter - Billy Holbrook - did a good job. We had a bunch of problems in traffic. We got held up in traffic a bunch and had to watch things. There's a reason Batman and I have been together for 15 years - he is that good, he knows where I want to go and we can read each other's minds. He got me through some places today that were pretty awesome. Our Chevy comes home in one piece and we saved our better one for Texas. If eighth was the one that wasn't as good, I'm looking forward to Texas.

ARE YOU SURPRISED AFTER YESTERDAY'S FRUSTRATIONS?  "I'm extremely surprised. I was hoping just to do a war of attrition, stay on the lead lap and finish in the top 15, and get out of here smiling on that. With how hard Bryan Berry works and how hard these guys work to try anything. Bryan did 10 different things, and they worked.

Shane Sieg, No. 15 Only78.com Silverado, Qualified 30th, Finished 17th: "All in all it was a pretty good day for us.  We didn't qualify as well as we would have liked, but we were able to pass some trucks and keep moving forward but we just a little tight. I had them loosen the truck up on the first stop and we would have probably been better if we had left it alone. I bumped the wall a few times because I was so loose.  But still a good run for us, Top-20 for us is good and I am really happy with that, it was a good day."

Willie Allen, No. 13 Pork/ThorSport Racing Silverado, Started 10th, Finished 20th: "Our Silverado was just loose the whole race. Lance Hooper (crew chief) and the crew kept working on it.  We got a little better and were able to stay get a decent finish. We were able to keep our position in the Raybestos Rookie of the Year standings, which is good. I am looking forward to heading to Texas."
