FORD POST RACE NOTES: EasyCare 200 at Atlanta
JOEY CLANTON - No. 09 Zaxby's Ford F-150 (Finished 6th) - "I can't say
enough for the Zaxby's guys, the whole race team and our Ford F-150. Our guys
stayed dedicated to it and got the truck up front and they made the right calls.
We saved two tires until the end. It worked in Texas for us and it worked for us
here, too." WHAT HAPPENED IN QUALIFYING? "I don't know what it was. We bottomed
out real hard in qualifying trying to run it wide open. We didn't do a mock run
yesterday, so the truck was just totally different in qualifying. We just gave
it our best on pit stops. We got in and out and kept our track position. We
didn't lose any and we were able to hang on and get us a top six. The top 10 is
what's crucial to us." TWO TIRES AT THE END HELPED DIDN'T IT? "Some guys took
the two before, but I think Gary made the call for track position. We tried
something at Texas when we made a green flag stop and I struggled out there with
trying to be able to run wide open, and when we put two tires on it was our
fastest laps of the race and the truck felt more comfortable. I don't know if
it's because the lefts were up and the rights were down, but it's something we
took from Texas and we did it here. We said we were gonna get two tires and
those were the fastest laps of the day for us." IT'S GOT TO BE SOMETHING MORE
THAN THIS BEING YOUR HOME TRACK AS TO WHY YOU RAN SO WELL TODAY. WHAT WAS IT? "I
don't know if it has anything to do with the home track. You just get up on the
wheel and it's no different than any other race track. If you adjust the truck
to be able to do it, then you can race. We've got good trucks. Mark is over
there running fourth in front of us and it just shows what the team is able to
do coming from the back. We just missed it on our qualifying setup and we just
had to battle all day to get up front." THIS HELPS AS FAR AS THE ROOKIE RACE
GOES. "This is definitely big. With the rookie of the year battle going on I
need top-10 finishes. I need to replace two more races now. I've got all 14 of
mine and I need that Zaxby's Ford right up front."
MARK MARTIN - No. 21 Bubba Burgers Ford F-150 (Finished 4th) - "I sure
would have liked to have gotten them a win. It was just about good enough, just
not quite with those short little runs, but on the long runs it was really
strong." YOU TRIED PASSING ON THE INSIDE AND IT JUST DIDN'T WORK. "Yeah, it was
just tough. We could have on a long run, but on the short run I just didn't have
enough and couldn't clear 'em. On a long run, I could pass any of those guys.
The thing was really easy on its tires."
TRAVIS KVAPIL - No. 6 K&N Filters Ford F-150 (Finished 11th) - "It
definitely wasn't what we thought we were gonna get out of it from yesterday's
practice. We just started off really loose and the farther we went along in the
race, we got the truck a little better but we'd lose a couple spots on the
restarts. That was where the truck was most vulnerable it seemed like and the
farther you'd get back in the traffic, the harder it was to get the truck to
handle. We were just off a little bit. I see our teammates struggled as well, so
we just need to take a good look at what we had as an organization and
definitely bring something back different. We brought it home in one piece and
Texas is a similar type of race track, but it's got a lot more grip than
Atlanta. I'm looking forward to taking this truck there and seeing if we can get
it back into Victory Lane."
BRIAN SCOTT - No. 16 Strutmasters Ford F-150 (Finished 19th) - "Yesterday
wasn't a great day, but we just went back to our notes and went back to the
basics and kind of looked at everything and made an educated decision about
where we needed to be today. We went out in qualifying and that was the first
chance to get on the track and it was just way better, leaps and bounds better.
Everybody kind of got pumped up after qualifying for the race and we had a
strong truck. It's just a learning experience for me, so it was all about making
cautious moves but good moves and trying not to hesitate and lose ground when
you didn't need to. Overall, it was good. The only damage was my fault. We put
new tires on and made an adjustment to tighten the truck up a little bit and I
couldn't get it to turn and got into the outside wall, but, overall, it was a
good day for the Strutmasters.com Ford."
DAVID STARR - No. 10 Int'l MAXX Force Diesel Ford F-150 (Finished 15th) -
YOU GOT DOWN A LAP AGAIN BUT GOT IT BACK AND MADE UP SOME GROUND. "That's not a
habit you like to get into. Our International Maxx Force Diesel Ford F-150
wasn't very good. We struggled from the time we got here. We lost a power
steering pump and a gear box in the first practice and never could get our Ford
F-150 dialed in in the second practice. We never even made a qualifying run, so
we were just trying to make our truck better for the race and spent the whole
second practice doing that and never really found what we needed. But it says a
lot for Dennis Connor and all the guys on this Circle Bar Racing team. We didn't
have a winning truck by any means, but we lost a lap and almost went down two
laps, but we kept digging. We were just trying to make adjustments and then
finally hit on something where it was finally halfway decent. You just can't
ever give up. This series is so competitive, but one thing I never do is give
up. I might get frustrated and my team might get frustrated because we're
struggling, but you just keep digging to the end."
RICK CRAWFORD - No. 14 Power Stroke Diesel by Int'l Ford F-150 (Finished
12th) - "It was tough for this Power Stroke Diesel by International Ford
F-Series pick-up, but that F-150 is built Ford tough. I hate to say it, but we
came home without a scratch and should have been in the top five. We kept
adjusting on it and there at the end you realize on your last stop, and that's
one thing about the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series, you don't get a lot of
adjustability built in because there's not many cautions. There at the end I
think me and Cowboy Starland and the Circle Bar crew really figured out what was
wrong with it but there wasn't any adjustments left." YOU TOOK TWO TIRES AND
GAINED TRACK POSITION BUT YOU COULDN'T HOLD THEM OFF. "Those were the only two
we had left. We had two tires left so we took 'em, but that wasn't necessarily
what made us finish 12th. We just didn't adjust the chassis just right. She was
loose all day. I turned more to the right than I did to the left."
