BOWYER: Involved in Early Wreck, Day Ends Abruptly at Loudon
Printer Version

  Discuss

Clint Bowyer made his third start for Kevin Harvick Inc. (KHI) in the No. 2 Camping World Chevrolet for the NASCAR Truck Series event at the New Hampshire International Speedway. Bowyer began the New Hampshire 200 from the 32nd position after the field was set by owner's points due to constant rainfall in the area. Bowyer was making his way through the field when he was caught up in a multi-truck accident, relegating him to a 35th-place finish.

Even though the No. 2 truck came with the same setup as the No. 33 of Ron Hornaday, Clint Bowyer struggled with the handling during the first practice Friday morning, commenting the truck was loose and needed more rear grip. Bowyer was only able to complete 13 laps during the first practice session, leaving him with an average time of 30.134 seconds (126.395 mph). He rounded out the first practice session 18th.

With a significant break between practices, the team completely changed the setup under the truck for Happy Hour. Once Happy Hour got underway, the team could see considerable changes in the truck's handling and lap times. They spent the entire session tweaking the setup for the 200-lap race the following day. Bowyer ended Happy Hour third quickest on the speed charts with a time of 29.534 seconds (128.963 mph).

Saturday morning Truck Series qualifying was rained out and the No. 2 team would have to start the race from the 32nd position. As the green flag waved, Bowyer steadily picked off positions moving into the top 20 by lap 12. He commented the truck was tight in the center of the corners and up off.

As he encountered traffic moving through the field, he said the truck's handling characteristics were not even similar to the truck they had the day before in practice, even though he was running lap times comparable to those of the leader.

A caution for debris waved over the speedway on lap 37 with Bowyer in the 17th position. This was the team's opportunity to make adjustments to the Camping World Chevrolet. Bowyer brought the No. 2 truck down pit lane for four tires, fuel and a trackbar adjustment on lap 39.

The race got back underway on lap 42 with the No. 2 truck in the 22nd position. After a few laps, Bowyer commented that the truck was still not to his liking.

Luckily another caution waved over New Hampshire International Speedway on lap 46 giving the Camping World team another opportunity to make adjustments.

Bowyer again brought the Chevrolet down pit road on lap 47 for fuel and a wedge adjustment.

As the race went back to green on lap 49, Bowyer carefully began to pick his way through the field. He was running in the 22nd position when several trucks made contact in front of him coming off turn two. Unfortunately with no place to go, Bowyer got caught up in the multi-truck accident. He sustained heavy front-end damage and limped the No. 2 truck to pit road. After surveying the damage, the crew determined the truck was unable to return to the race and headed for the garage.

Clint Bowyer: "We were working our way up through the field, but as that first long run went on we got pretty tight. Wally (Rogers, crew chief) and the crew made some adjustments under that first caution and we were a little better. We had another quick caution, and then we were the caution. The 40 truck spun and blocked the track and there were trucks spinning and bouncing off each other. I just didn't have anywhere to go. I feel bad for everyone at Kevin Harvick Inc., Camping World, Wally and the whole crew, because I think we could have made it better as the day went on and got up pretty close to the front."
