BELL: Pit Road Problems Hurt at Loudon

T.J. Bell's race looked promising in the early going, but ended disappointingly as the No. 50 Heathcliff's Cat Litter Ford finished in the 16th position, one lap down.

With rain canceling Saturday morning's NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series qualifying session, the field was set by 2007 point standings, putting Bell 21st on the starting grid. The No. 50 Ford looked strong in the early going, advancing to the 18th position in the opening laps. Bell reported to the Heathcliff's crew that his F-150 was tight off the corners, and that he would need an adjustment to correct the problem when he came to pit road. When the first caution of the race flew at lap 37 for debris, Bell got the opportunity he needed to come to pit road. Crew chief John Quinn made the call to take four tires, fuel, and make air pressure adjustments to each of the four tires to help Bell's corner exit. The Heathcliff's crew advanced Bell to the 17th position for the lap 43 restart.

Bell was silent on the radio in the early going of the next run, focusing on hitting his marks and doing what he could to advance his position. Bell narrowly escaped a major four truck crash in front of him at lap 57, managing to make it through the wreck without sustaining any damage. Bell was able to pick up a position from the wreck, advancing to the 16th position for the restart. He quickly picked up the 15th position when the field went back to green flag racing, and he would continue to hold the spot until green flag pit stops began for the leaders at lap 125. Bell ran as high as the eighth position at lap 130 before he brought the No. 50 to pit road for a green flag stop. What was supposed to be routine service for tires, fuel and a wedge adjustment turned into a 21 second stop, leaving Bell far behind the leader's. An untimely caution at lap 141 for a wreck involving the No. 51 truck trapped Bell one lap down.

Bell did what he could in the final 50 laps to put himself in position for the lucky dog free pass, but the race went caution free to the conclusion. Bell battled teammate Travis Kvapil in the closing laps, but was forced to settle for 16th when the checkered flag dropped.

"We thought we had a lot better race truck than that, but we just got stuck in traffic all day long," said Bell. "Our Heathcliff's Cat Litter Ford F-150 was really good, but we just had to use it up way too much trying to get past people and by the time we'd get through people we'd get a caution. We struggled a little bit on our pit stops today, especially on our green flag stop when we needed a good stop. I guess we need to go back to the shop and try to get our trucks a little bit better."

The Craftsman Truck Series next races at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on Saturday, September 22.
