Roush Fenway Racing Swaps Truck Crews

Never one to embrace the status quo, Roush Fenway Racing owner Jack Roush has made changes he hopes will improve the performance of two if his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series teams. John Quinn, previously the crew chief for Erik Darnell and the No. 99 Ford, will move over to the team's No. 50 Ford. Meanwhile, Matt Puccia, who has worked with Carl Edwards, T.J. Bell, Peter Shepherd, and Danny O'Quinn, will move from the No. 50 to the No. 99. The teams' crewmembers will also make the move.

Roush has taken this gamble in the past, and on one occasion it has paid huge dividends for him. In 2002, Roush swapped crews for Mark Martin and Kurt Busch, pairing the 2000 NCTS rookie of the year with Martin's long-time crew chief Jimmy Fennig. Fennig was able to harness Busch's aggressiveness and talent and brought the organization its second consecutive NASCAR Cup Series championship in 2004. Other crew swaps, such as the Bob Osborne/Wally Brown switch in 2006, produced less-than-desired results. Osborne eventually returned to Carl Edwards' pit box and has put Edwards back in contention to win the series championship; Brown left the organization altogether for Joe Gibbs Racing in 2007.

After winning the Raybestos Rookie of the Year title in 2006, hopes were high for Darnell to make a run at the championship in 2007. Darnell scored his first career series win at Kansas in April, but has struggled to find consistency throughout the season. Darnell's Kansas win is his only top five finish of the year, and he has just six top ten finishes in 17 starts. The No. 50 team picked up a pole and finished fourth with Carl Edwards driving at Fontana, but has only two more top ten finishes since. T.J. Bell finished ninth at Charlotte in May and Danny O'Quinn was tenth at Bristol in August. In the most recent race on the schedule, Darnell finished seventh at Gateway while Bell was involved in a late-race crash that relegated him to 24th at the finish.

Darnell currently sits tenth in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series driver's championship standings. The Roush Fenway Racing No. 50 team currently sits 21st in the owner's championship standings.
