Jon Wood won't hide his emotions. He will tell you what he thinks with honest, sometimes brutal, honesty. That was the case after last Saturday night's Dodge Dealers Ram Tough 200 at the Gateway International Raceway.
Although his Wood Brothers/JTG Racing team finished 14th, Wood wasn't pleased about the team's progress with its short-track program. But instead of complaining, he vowed to work with crew chief John Monsam to make it better.
Wood's Ford F-150 started 35th. He quickly moved toward the Top 10, but his progress stalled once he got inside the Top 15. He said the No. 21 Bubba Burgers Ford was too good not to be a contender, especially since he and Mark Martin have combined to give the team six Top-13 finishes in nine races.
The team has two weeks to make improvements before traveling to the New Hampshire International Speedway for the New Hampshire 200.
Jon Wood, Driver No. 21 Bubba Burgers Ford F-150: "It's a solid finish, especially since we started 25th, but it's still not what we are looking for," he said. "Our short track program is not up to par in comparison to our downforce package. We're doing different things instead of re-doing what's wrong. We are searching for something that's going to work. We're making improvements. With little testing time, it's just going to take more races to figure it out."
"It's still a great race team. It's nice to be upset with a Top-15 finish. There are a lot of teams in this garage area that would be happy with a 14th-place finish. We expect more, though."
