St. Louis, MO (September 2, 2007)-NASCAR NEXTEL Cup and Busch Series regular and St. Louis, Missouri native, Kenny Wallace made his first appearance back in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series in 11 years Saturday afternoon at the Gateway International Raceway. Wallace piloted the No. 51 Flanders Beef Patties Billy Ballew Motorsports Chevrolet Silverado and brought home a 13th place finish in his first race in the NCTS since Phoenix, 1996.
Wallace placed the No. 51 Flanders Beef Patties Silverado in the 11th place position on the starting grid for the 160 lap, 200 mile race. Wallace's time of 34.200 seconds at a speed of 131.579 mph starting him directly in front of teammate JR Norris in the No. 15 Flanders Beef Patties Silverado.
Wallace radioed into friend and crew chief, Richie Wauters that the truck was decent in turn one and two but in turns three and four he was tight. Wallace let the truck settle into the groove and by lap 35, Wallace reported that the truck had started to free up. Wallace continued to battle the tight conditions all day telling the crew that he thought it could be an air pressure issue with the Goodyear tires.
The1.25-mile track is known for difficult set-ups with both sets of turns having variants of banking also reeking havoc on the brakes. On lap 69, Wallace reported to the crew that he had lost his brakes and had to modify his driving style into the corners by letting off the gas. This adjustment actually improved his corner entry, center and exit increasing Wallace's lap times.
Wallace was in the tenth place position when he came in for his last stop of the race on lap 106 but lost three spots due to a hang-up on pit road. The team had an earlier error during a stop that lost four spots for Wallace. Determined to make the spots up, Wallace charged through the field, gaining three positions in the last 10 percent of the 160 lap race. A wreck on lap 159 caused a yellow flag finish placing Wallace in the 11th position for the end of the event.
"We had a great time out there, Wallace said. "These Billy Ballew Motorsports trucks are fast. We hoped to get a top-five today in the No. 51 Flanders Beef Patties Chevrolet Silverado. We should have started with the air pressure up in the tires; it took too many laps to work up the heat in them. We had a couple bad pit stops that put us back a few spots which we just couldn't gain back. But I can't complain too much. We had a great time today, didn't tear up the truck, and brought home a 13th place finish for Billy Ballew."
The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is off next weekend but will join the NASCAR NEXTEL Cup Series at the New Hampshire International Speedway in Loudon, New Hampshire for the running of the New Hampshire 200 (200 laps, 211.6 miles) Saturday, September 15, 2007.
