| KVAPIL: Inches Closer in Championship Points with 6th at Gateway
09-04-2007 | TruckSeries.com Report
The No. 6 K&N team struggled throughout the race weekend at Gateway International Raceway but their tenaciousness prevailed. Travis Kvapil had a disappointing qualifying run in the back up truck but stayed steadfast throughout the race. Coming from 23rd position, Kvapil was able to bring home a sixth place finish inching him closer to the points lead. The No. 6 K&N Ford F-150 was fast off the truck at the start of the first practice session Friday morning until half-way through. The truck broke loose and backed into the wall forcing the team to pull out the backup truck. The back up truck was slow to start during Friday's happy hour practice and Saturday's qualifying session didn't look much better. Kvapil turned a lap time of 34.591 seconds, placing him in 23rd for the start of the 200-mile race while Mike Skinner captured another pole with a lap time of 33.909 seconds. The K&N team was down, but not out. At the start of the race crew chief Mike Beam gave the K&N team some word of encouragement stating, "This is a long race. We have plenty of time. Let's stay focused and listen and we'll have a good day." And the team did just that. The green flag waved over the 35-truck field and Skinner immediately jumped into the lead with Kvapil settling into 22nd. The first of six cautions flew on lap 14 when the No. 09 and No. 15 tangled and the No. 6 Ford came down pit road in 19th for the first time. Beam called for right side tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment to help the F-150 rotate better through the middle of the corners. Just a few trucks pitted placing Kvapil in 22nd for the re-start on lap 20. The field went on a long green flag run and Kvapil began methodically moving his way to the front entering the top-15 by lap 39 and the top-10 by lap 57. As Kvapil entered the top-10, the second caution flew when the No. 5 truck of points leader Skinner blew a right front tire. Beam called for Kvapil to bring the No. 6 truck down pit road for four tires, fuel and a wedge adjustment. In 16.43 seconds the K&N team returned Kvapil to the track picking up one position in the process. The field re-started on lap 63 with Kvapil inside the top-10, where he would stay for the remainder of the race. Kvapil came down pit road for the final time under caution on lap 106. In just 15.9 seconds the K&N team changed four tires, re-fueled and made an air pressure and wedge adjustment returning Kvapil to the track in sixth, up one position from where he entered. The green flag once again waved over the 1.25-mile oval and Kvapil continued to show why he is a champion. He maintained a spot inside the top-10 and never broke stride even under a red flag condition when the No. 4 and No. 50 went careening into the wall. The field resumed under yellow after five minutes and took the green on lap 133. While the No. 23 and No. 33 battled for the lead, Kvapil continued to run in seventh. As the field came around the raceway for the final time the No. 22 spun in front of Kvapil bringing out the sixth and final caution along with the checkered flag. Johnny Benson took home the win while Kvapil brought home a hard-fought sixth place finish. "Our whole weekend was okay," said Kvapil following the race. "The K&N team had a really good truck yesterday and we wrecked our primary. We brought the back up out and really struggled in practice and struggled in qualifying. We were pretty good through the corners and slowly worked our way up through there. Good pit stops got us a couple of good adjustments on pit road. We drove a smart race and kept our nose clean and slowly worked our way into the top-10. It feels like we definitely had things that we could improve upon." As for the championship, Kvapil still remains positive that the K&N team has a chance to win it all. "All in all, I was waiting for the day when the No. 5 truck [Mike Skinner] was going to have a bad day and I didn't know it was ever going to come." Kvapil continued, "We still have a lot of ground to make-up. The No. 33 [Ron Hornaday] is going to have to have some bad luck. We just keep plugging along, doing the best we can. Hopefully, when we're in Homestead we'll have a shot at it." Kvapil's teammates finished seventh (Erik Darnell) and 22nd (T.J. Bell). Kvapil remains third in the overall points standings, 194 points out of first. Ron Hornaday took over the points lead while Skinner dropped to second, four points behind Hornaday. The NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series is off next weekend but returns to action at New Hampshire International Speedway on Saturday, September 15, 2007.
