08-24-2007 | TruckSeries.com Report
Cale Gale, driver of the No. 2 Camping World Chevrolet Silverado, finished his first race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway with a solid ninth-place finish Wednesday night in the O'Reilly 200. For Gale's first race at Bristol (Tenn.) Motor Speedway, Crew Chief Wally Rogers of KHI's No. 77 Busch Series Chevrolet stepped over to the Truck Series to assist Crew Chief Charlie Wilson. Tuesday, during an open practice session, Gale was 24th fastest with a time of 16.270 (117.935 mph). The session was stopped due to rain, and resumed several hours later. Practice continued Wednesday morning, with Gale stating the No. 2 truck was "tight in the middle." Several adjustments were made to make the truck more comfortable for Gale. He ended the second practice with a time of 16.234 (118.196) which put him 27th fastest. For the final practice, Gale was 7th quickest with a time of 15.987 (120.023 mph). During qualifying, Gale was able to clock a lap of 16.013 (119.828 mph), placing him 15th on the starting grid. As the race got underway, Gale was able to hold onto the 15th position until the second caution of the night which flew on lap 33. Gale described the condition of his truck as "a little tight in the middle, but not bad." Gale was summoned to pit road to make his only pit stop of the night, where the No. 2 team made adjustments on the truck, changed four tires and added fuel. Pit strategies were already unfolding, as several trucks opted to stay out, some took fuel only and others took two tires. Gale restarted on lap 45 in the 23rd position and began his move to the front. The caution flag waved again on lap 69, with Gale in the 21st position. The team opted to stay out, and restarted on lap 74 in the 20th position. At the half-way point, Gale was in the 16th position. He continued to lay down fast laps, and continued to move the No. 2 Camping World Chevrolet forward. "Great Job man," the team said during a caution on lap 103 where the No. 2 truck decided to stay out. "Keep digging. You got time right now to take a breath and get a drink of water." The race restarted on lap 108, with Gale in the 13th position. By lap 120, Gale had moved into the 11th position. In response to a caution on lap 123, Gale let the team know how his first race at Bristol was going. "I don't want to come in," explained Gale. "I am loving this!" The team comically replied by saying, "Good, because you're not. Keep digging; keep doing what you're doing." On the restart, with 72 laps to go, Gale remained in the 11th position. On lap 136, Gale moved into the top-10 for the first time of the night before being passed on lap 140 by KHI teammate Ron Hornaday. With 50 laps to go, Gale was in the 11th position and looking to move closer to the front. After a caution on lap 180, Gale restarted the race in the 10th position, and by lap 187, he had moved into the ninth position. A late caution on lap 189 caused the field to restart single file with five laps to go. Gale restarted ninth and was able to hold on to the position, bringing home his best finish in the Truck Series in 2007. Gale had a great run in his first appearance at "The World's Fastest Half-Mile," and was quick to commend his team. "Thanks for the hard work all year. It's only going to get better, I promise."
