David Green and the Red Horse Racing team entered Nashville Superspeedway on Saturday with high hopes and a conventional setup underneath their No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota Tundra. During practice, the team elected to switch over to a 'coil-bound' setup which has an aerodynamic advantage by producing more down force and less drag. The changeover, which most teams normally perform back at the shop, is a tough one; but one accomplished by Crew Chief Jamie Jones and his team during practice on Friday at the 1.333-mile oval.
When Green took to the track for qualifying, he did so without running a mock qualifying lap in practice. His first qualifying laps came in the heat of the day on Saturday as he laid down the 24th fastest time with a lap of 30.991 seconds at a speed of 154.845 miles an hour.
"Not doing a mock run in qualifying, we didn't know what to expect there," explained Green. "From where we started to the end of the race says a lot about Jamie "JJ" Jones' knowledge and his dedication to making our trucks drive better. We are continually learning about these trucks and I'm learning what to tell "JJ" and to explain to him what I'm feeling and what I want us to work on."
Communication wasn't an issue as Green keyed the radio early in the race to tell the crew that his No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota was "real tight". When the first caution was displayed for debris on lap 43, Green dove to pit road where the Red Horse Racing crew outfitted their Toyota with four fresh tires, fuel, and air pressure and chassis adjustments. The crew picked up five spots on pit road and returned Green to the track in 18th position.
By switching to a coil-bound setup, Green and Jones were hoping to have more down force for faster corner speeds and less drag for faster straightaway speeds. It's not an exact science and takes some time to figure out, but it appeared that they had hit their mark on the restart at lap 47. "Whoa," said Green, "I'm on my right front spring getting in."
Green avoided the event's next two caution flags and did a phenomenal job of dodging a wreck after the restart on lap 68. "I slid my tires," said Green who remained on track until the fourth caution waved on lap 111. Green gave up 18th spot to hit pit road with the leaders on lap 112, where he took on four tires, fuel, and another round of air pressure and chassis adjustments. The pit crew ripped off another quick stop, returning Green to the track in 13th position.
When the race resumed on lap 115, Green raced three-wide before settling into 14th spot for the final twenty laps. "We made the most of our weekend and gained a few points in the owner's standings," said Green. "I'm kind of disappointed that we finished 14th and that we didn't get a solid top-five finish but I'm proud of "JJ" and all the guys on the team in enabling us to work through some stuff with our front end packages that will enable us to get better down the road. Unfortunately it takes a race or two to get that lined out."
"To go to Nashville with one plan in place and to be able to orchestrate a change like "JJ" did says a lot about the caliber of team and the type of Crew Chief that "JJ" is," Green continued. "Unfortunately it resulted in a finish that is not what we expected, deserve and are capable of getting. Nashville is one of my favorite tracks and I had high expectations just like the team did from their run there last year, but things have changed since last year and there are some areas that we need to explore. We chose to explore that this past weekend. We made the most out of it and learned a lot. I think our notebook now is a lot thicker and "JJ" is more knowledgeable and I'm more knowledgeable about what we need to do for the next race. We just had a little stumbling block, but we worked through it and I think we understand what direction we need to go in."
Green and the Red Horse Racing team will enjoy a weekend off before taking the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota to Bristol Motor Speedway for the running of the O'Reilly 200 on Wednesday, August 22nd. Live television coverage will be provided by SPEED at 7:30 p.m. ET with radio coverage coming to you live from MRN Radio.
