Jon Wood knew Saturday night's Toyota 200 would be tough before it started. By starting 25th, the No. 21 Bush's Baked Beans/ Bubba Burgers Ford would have to race without track position and, most importantly, the kind of aerodynamic comfort that comes with it.
Despite the deficit, Wood rallied the Wood Brothers/JTG Racing-prepared Ford F-150 to a seventh-place finish.
The 150-lap race at the Nashville Superspeedway didn't give Wood a lot of time to make up ground. In fact, he said if the race were 200 laps, he probably could have celebrated a Top-Five finish.
Since taking over in the No. 21 Bush's Baked Beans/ Bubba Burgers Ford, Wood has finished seventh or better in two of three starts.
The team's next race is the O'Reilly 200 at the Bristol Motor Speedway on Aug. 22.
Jon Wood, Driver No. 21 Bush's Baked Beans/ Bubba Burgers Ford F-150:
"We always seem to have a good race truck," Wood said. "It seems like the only thing we're lacking right now is our qualifying effort. It hurt us today and on the two speedways so far. With these races being so short, it's tough to get a good track position.
"We'll work on our qualifying package so we don't have to start the race with bad track position. It's difficult when you have to make something happen in all that dirty air. We spent all 150 laps Saturday working our way through traffic. We just ran out of time. If the race had been 50 laps longer, we would have been Top Five. The good thing about this Wood Brothers/JTG Racing team is if you give them a challenge, like our qualifying package, they really jump on it. I'm sure there will be a dramatic improvement by the time we get to Bristol."
