KVAPIL: Blazes to Victory in Sweltering Heat at Nashville

The temperature wasn't the only thing that was hot in Nashville this weekend. Travis Kvapil and the No. 6 K&N team sizzled on track. From practice, to qualifying, to win number three of the 2007 season, Kvapil and company were the team to beat.

The No. 6 Ford F-150 was solid in both practice sessions on Friday under the sweltering heat of Lebanon, Tenn. Saturday saw no relief in the air temperature but Kvapil's Ford went to the tight side during his two lap qualifying effort. Kvapil clocked in at 30.380 seconds, good enough for the 11th starting position. Mike Skinner took the pole with a fast lap time of 30.061 seconds but his place at the top of the scoring tower would be short-lived.

Kvapil entered the Nashville Superspeedway race with four starts under his belt at the 1.333-mile oval but he looked like an old pro. The No. 5 truck of Skinner led the field into turn one for the green flag and Kvapil immediately jockeyed for position. By lap 10 he had moved into the seventh position and reported that the K&N Ford needed to turn better in the middle of the corners. Crew chief Mike Beam planned a track bar and tire pressure adjustment during the first pit stop to help Kvapil's handling issues.

The first caution flew on lap 41 for debris on the track and the field came down pit road for the first time of the night. Kvapil pulled into the K&N pit for four tires, fuel and a handful of adjustments and returned to the track in sixth, up two positions from where he came in. The green flag flew again on lap 46 and the No. 6 K&N Ford blazed through the field picking off the competition one at a time. By lap 75, the half-way point, Kvapil was the fastest truck on the track in fifth and there was no looking back for the Wisconsin native and his team.

Kvapil battled past Chevy's and Toyota's eventually finding his way to the top of the charts on lap 103. Shortly after Kvapil took over the lead, the fourth caution flew brining the field down pit road for the final time of the night. Beam called for a small air pressure adjustment, four tires and fuel during their pit stop on lap 111 and the K&N team shined returning Kvapil to the track 14.8 seconds later. After the first pit stop the No. 6 team had a moment of concern when the right front tire had a blister the size of a plum on the side, but it didn't seem to hold Kvapil back. Kvapil took the green flag again on lap 114 and never relinquished the lead. With every lap that clicked off, Kvapil extended his lead over the No. 33 of Ron Hornaday Jr.

The field rounded turn four for the final time on lap 150 under a rain of flashbulbs and with Kvapil at the helm. The win brought the K&N team's win column to three for the season along with seven top-five and 10 top-10 finishes. Following the race, Kvapil visited the media center where he commented on his win.
"It was pretty awesome," said Kvapil in a post-race press conference. "It took our K&N Ford half the race to get the track position and the right adjustment in it. This is the truck we won with in Michigan and finished second in Kentucky with. We had good notes on it and always had speed every time we took it to the track. We were 10th or 15th yesterday off the truck and the team really busted their tail in practice yesterday and the team engineer made all the right moves. We started the race and it was a little too tight, but I felt like a lot of that was attributed to the fact that I was back there 10th and having a lot of traffic. That first stop we made an air pressure adjustment and it really brought the truck to life."

Kvapil's teammates finished ninth (Erik Darnell) and 17th (Danny O'Quinn Jr.). In the race for the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series championship, Kvapil cut the points lead by 15 coming within 236 points of leader Skinner. Kvapil currently sits third in the overall point standings as the truck series takes a week off before returning to competition at Bristol Motor Speedway on Wednesday, August 22.
