O'QUINN: Finishes 17th in Truck Series Debut at Nashville

Danny O'Quinn considered his NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series debut a successful one. While he agreed that the finish could have been better and did not indicate how strong the No. 50 Northern Tool + Equipment team ran throughout much of the race, he did feel that his Northern Tool + Equipment team showed great potential and looks forward to racing with them again at Bristol.

O'Quinn started the race in the 12th position, but the No. 50 Northern Tool + Equipment Ford began to lose positions at the drop of the green flag. O'Quinn had fallen to the 18th position by lap five, when he reported to the crew that his motor had a slight miss. After swapping ignition boxes, the problem seemed to solve itself, and O'Quinn set out to regain his lost ground. By lap 25, O'Quinn had advanced to the 15th position. He reported to his crew that his F-150 was loose in traffic, but he was able to handle what he had. When the caution flag came out at lap 42 for debris, O'Quinn came to pit road for tires and fuel. O'Quinn and crew chief Matt Puccia agreed not to make any adjustments, leaving the truck as it was.

O'Quinn restarted in the 15th position, and would hold the position for much of the ensuing green flag run. O'Quinn told his crew that he was trying to get comfortable with how the trucks handled in traffic, and that he was happy with the overall handling of his F-150. As the laps clicked off, O'Quinn's Northern Tool + Equipment Ford began to develop a tight condition, forcing him to alter his line on the racetrack. O'Quinn caught the break he needed when the No. 23 truck wrecked at lap 109, bringing out the caution flag. O'Quinn came to pit road for tires, fuel and a track bar adjustment. A great stop by the No. 50 crew sent O'Quinn back on track in the 11th position for the restart at lap 115.

O'Quinn waged a heated battle for position with teammate Erik Darnell, and looked to be in position to bring home a top-10 finish. However in the closing laps, O'Quinn reported that he had developed a tight condition, and that his F-150 did not want to turn in the corners. O'Quinn backslid to the 17th position, where he would ultimately finish. After the race, the crew examined the tires off O'Quinn's Ford, and found that they had an equalized tire, resulting in the handling issues that eliminated him from contention. O'Quinn felt better knowing what had happened, but regretted that he was not able to bring home the finish he felt they deserved.

"We kept the truck in one piece," said O'Quinn of his Craftsman Truck Series debut. "We were too tight today. We made some good adjustments on our Ford F-150, but it just wasn't responding to the adjustments that we made. We thought we could be a little better than we were, but that's part of racing, Matt Puccia (crew chief) and everybody on the Northern Tool + Equipment team, they gave me a good piece, we just needed to free it up a little more and we know that for next time. I just have to thank Northern Tool + Equipment and everybody for giving me this opportunity. Hopefully we can have another run like this at Bristol and give the hometown crowd something to cheer about."

The Craftsman Truck Series next competes at Bristol Motor Speedway on Wednesday, August 22.
