HORNADAY: Keeps Champ Points Pressure on With 2nd Place Finish at Nashville
TruckSeries.com Report Printer Version

  Discuss

Ron Hornaday's impressive second-place finish in the Toyota Tundra 200 marks his eighth top-five and 14th top-10 finish of the 2007 season. In 15 starts, Hornaday has earned three wins, completed 2506 of 2506 possible laps, and led 454 laps. He continues to hold the second position in the championship point standings, just 82 markers out of first.

Hornaday's Camping World truck was strong in both practice sessions at the Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway. The No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet was fourth quickest with a time of 30.694 seconds (156.343 mph) during the first practice session. In the final practice the truck ran solidly in fourth, until an adjustment toward the end of the session slowed the truck. At the conclusion of practice, Hornaday posted a final time of 30.508 seconds (157.296 mph) in 11th place.

During the course of the two-day event at the Nashville (Tenn.) Superspeedway, temperatures soared. At times it was a stifling 109 degrees. As Hornaday stood on pit road and prepared to qualify his No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet, the average temperature was 104 degrees. Hornaday only completed one qualifying lap, at a time of 30.492 seconds (157.379), which put him in 14th place to start the event. Over the radio he told his crew the truck was "way too loose," but that he thought it would be fine once the race started and he was in traffic.

On the first lap of the 200-lap race, Hornaday moved from 14th to 11th, and was in the 10th spot by the second lap.

By lap 38, Hornaday had moved up to fifth place, and on lap 43 the caution flag flew for debris in turn three. Hornaday told crew chief Rick Ren, "The truck is a little snug in the middle of the corner, but not enough to want to change it yet." Hornaday headed to pit road in the fourth position for a scheduled stop for four tires and fuel. The Camping World crew had trouble removing one of the rear tires, which slowed the stop, leaving Hornaday to restart the race on lap 47 in eighth.

Hornaday steadily made his way forward with Travis Kvapil right behind him. On lap 72, Kvapil passed Hornaday for the fifth position.

When Hornaday fell back to the seventh spot on lap 98, he radioed his crew to remind them that he needed some help to make the No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet turn better in the corner.

The caution flag came out again on lap 111 and Hornaday headed to pit road for four tires, fuel and an air pressure adjustment. The No. 33 crew had a very fast pit stop and helped Hornaday gain three spots, moving up to fourth. "Awesome stop guys," said Rick Ren.

By lap 114, Hornaday had moved into the third position. It didn't take long for Hornaday to make his move on Mike Skinner and claim the second spot.

The final caution occurred on lap 122. Over the next several laps, Hornaday made a valiant attempt to pass race leader Kvapil, but was unsuccessful. Hornaday earned his third second-place finish of the season, and is only 82 points behind Truck Series points leader Mike Skinner.

Ron Hornaday Quotes:
"I don't even know what Rick changed. Whatever change he made to the right side air pressures really made the truck come alive and we were able to get up there and run with Travis (Kvapil) and Skinner (Mike).

"Travis runs me clean, and I wasn't going to play rough with him with 30 to go. Maybe if it was three laps to go it would have been a different story. We were a little better through the corners, but he was a little better off the corners."

"My guys were awesome today. We learned a bunch about the new tire and how it works with the track. We had a good points day. We'll take second and go to Bristol."
