NASCAR NOTES: Toyota 200 at Nashville Race Review

Too many champions are too perfect to see much of a point swing on a given night in the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series.

Travis Kvapil's third victory of the season Saturday night at Nashville Superspeedway hardly dented Mike Skinner's edge over the third-ranked driver in the title race. Kvapil has gained just 34 points on the leader with his fifth finish of third or better in his most recent six starts.

Ron Hornaday Jr. finished a position ahead of Skinner - second vs. third - and dropped five points to the leader, whose lead is 82 points with 10 races remaining. Most of Skinner's advantage comes from the bonus points he's collected - 100 to Hornaday's 55 - in leading all 15 races.

Todd Bodine, who slipped from third to fourth with a fifth-place finish, just shrugged.

"I've said all along that the only way any of us are going to gain points is if somebody has a bad race and wrecks and finishes at the back," said the 2006 champion. "We're all going to be top-five trucks every week and when that's the way it is you don't gain points: you just move around a little bit.

"It's going to take a big mistake on somebody's part to change that."

With Kvapil's win, former series champions have won 12 of the 15 races held in 2007.

Roush Fenway Racing could reach the magic number 50 - as in victories - before the season concludes. The team's second Nashville win (Carl Edwards won in 2003) marked the 47th time it's gone to Victory Lane.

The teams have won slightly more than a quarter - four - of the year's first 15 races.

Skinner became the first driver in 2007 to reach the half million dollar mark. His winnings, which on Saturday included a Craftsman-posted $8,000 for leading the race's 80th lap, stand at $526,850.

The leader matched last year's Bud Pole total with his eighth No. 1 qualifying effort. Skinner holds the record at 10 - set in his 1995 championship season. Nashville's pole was the 50-year-old veteran's 40th.

Joe Ruttman's cameo appearance in the No. 04 Fastenal Dodge came with a novel twist. The 62-year-old ran a couple of laps, went to the garage, then returned to the track with 10 laps to go and finished the race.

Ruttman joked that he needed a nap between shifts.

Ken Schrader moved into the 15th position in driver standings following a finish of 22nd. That's the highest a Dodge-shod competitor has ranked in 2007.

A two-tire call by crew chief Dennis Connor boosted David Starr from ninth to second on the team's final pit stop. Starr held on to finish fourth and post his season-best rank by a position over his only other top five at Texas Motor Speedway.

Driving partner Rick Crawford went from a few hundred feet of being lapped to finish sixth thanks to a timely debris caution at lap 33 and some major adjustments from crew chief Cowboy Starland.

"Dennis said the left side tires have absolutely no wear on them (so) right before the last pit stops, Dennis made that great call," said Starr. "We knew if we had track position that we'd have a shot at (a top five)."

Crawford's run took him from a low of 28th to contender at the end as he won a late position battle with Jon Wood. "The truck was fun to drive," he said after moving up a position, to fifth, in season points.

Blake Bjorklund briefly raced his way into the top 10 and settled for a career-high13th. The third-ranked Raybestos Rookie of the Year candidate improved on a 16th at Dover, another concrete track.

Joey Clanton finished 10th (off a start of fourth, his best) to head the freshman contingent.

Nashville Superspeedway is one of seven currently scheduled tracks hosting five or more races without a repeat winner. Kvapil was winner No. 7 at Nashville. Homestead and New Hampshire share the most winners without a repeater - 11.
