When looking at Ted Musgrave's racing statistics in the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, and comparing finish results by race track, only one track edges Nashville Superspeedway as a better race track for Musgrave. California Speedway holds the top spot for the 2005 Truck Series champion with an average finish of 2.6 while Nashville Superspeedway ranks second with an average finish of 2.7. The statistics definitely support Musgrave's excitement for racing in Saturday's Toyota Tundra 200 on the concrete oval just outside of Nashville, Tenn.
"I like race tracks that are a little unique, that have some different quality. Nashville Superspeedway is certainly unique," said Musgrave. "You have to drive that race track a little different than what it looks like, I don't want to give out the secrets, but I kind of drive it different maybe than a lot of drivers. The track is a challenge but there are a lot of grooves you can use to get around it. It's a track I really enjoy racing."
Musgrave's list of finishes at Nashville Superspeedway is strong. In his first trip to the track in 2001 he finished second, then third, then second, then third
since his first race at the speedway, he has alternated finishes between second and third, only last year, which would've been a third place year according to Musgrave's trends, he finished fourth.
"Last year we started practice with a setup that was something new for us. It wasn't working, so we moved the Team ASE Tundra setup back to something like I'd driven at Nashville Superspeedway in the past," explained Musgrave. "We started 17th but made it to the top ten fairly quickly. After some adjustments to the Tundra, it looked like we were going to end up maybe fifth, but (Mike) Skinner and Todd (Bodine) got together we ended up fourth."
What matters to Musgrave isn't proving anything - a record of six starts and no finishes worse than fourth speaks for itself. Instead, Musgrave is focused on continuing his streak of strong finishes at Nashville Superspeedway.
"I know that (last year) was my first finish outside the top-three at Nashville, but we aren't heading back there thinking we've got anything to prove. To say you've raced at a track six times and your worst finish is fourth is pretty strong. We'll work on keeping our top-four streak continuing and trying to put the Team ASE Tundra in the winner's circle in Nashville," said Musgrave.
Racing in the Toyota Tundra 200 as a Tundra driver is a different experience than when you drive a truck of a different brand.
"Last year was my first experience as a Tundra driver in Nashville. We participated in a Q&A session with the Toyota team members they bring to the race track and it was neat to see how well-attended the event was by the guests and the Toyota drivers. Seeing the Toyota team members in the grandstands - there were a lot of them. It was a really neat event and I'm looking forward to meeting the Toyota team members again this year," said Musgrave, who ranks eighth in Truck Series points.
