Indianapolis is known as the "Crossroads of America" with truckers passing through it on their way to and from the North, South, East, and West, so it's only fitting that the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series descended on the Indianapolis area for 200-laps of racing action at O'Reilly Raceway Park (ORP) at Indianapolis on Friday night. David Green, who is a truck driver in his own right, drove the No. 1 RFMS Toyota Tundra to a 15th place finish in his second start behind the wheel of the Red Horse Racing machine.
"Most of my experience at ORP has been in a NASCAR Busch Series car," explained Green prior to the race. "In 1994, I got the track record there and it still stands which helps on the excitement level when you go to a track knowing that you've done well there in the past." Green's opportunity to get the track record in the Craftsman Truck Series was cut short when Mother Nature washed out qualifying on Friday afternoon and delayed the start of the Power Stroke Diesel 200.
After a brief rain delay, racing action got underway at the Indianapolis short track with the field taking the green flag based on their position in the 2007 Owner's Points. Green was eighth at the start but slid to 10th while "struggling with rear grip on entry" in the opening laps. Green became "tight in the center" and slid to 14th position before hitting pit road, under caution, on lap 81. The Red Horse Racing crew outfitted their Toyota with four tires, fuel, track bar and air pressure adjustments, returning Green to the track in 13th position.
While racing side by side in a tight five truck battle for position, Green barely missed being spun out by a rookie competitor. "He tried to spin me out," Green said over the radio to the crew. Being a veteran in NASCAR paid off as Green kept is cool and focused on the task at hand. "My drive off is good, and I'm pretty decent in the center," said Green, just as the caution was displayed on lap 123 for a single truck wreck in turn two.
Green gave up 18th position to hit pit road for four tires, fuel, and a track bar adjustment, returning to the track 22nd. On the restart, Green wasted no time moving into the top-20. Green picked off his competition and moved into 14th position on lap 174. "You've got them by three tenths," said Crew Chief Jamie Jones. "Keep doing what you're doing." Green did just that but lost a spot to the No. 88 at the drop of the checkered flag following a green/white/checkered flag finish.
"We were decent tonight," said Green. "A top-15 finish isn't a bad run, but I know that this team is better and we can do better. I'm still learning what type of feedback to give the crew to make the truck faster, and a place like ORP is a tough little track. I think it will take a few weeks maybe before we're completely comfortable with each other, but it's a nice start, for sure. These guys have proven that they can be a top-five, top-10 truck each week, and that's where we expect to finish. It's just a matter of time before you see this truck where it should be, because I have all the confidence in the world in these guys."
Green and the Red Horse Racing team will enjoy a weekend off before taking the No. 1 RFMS/Red Horse Racing Toyota to Nashville Superspeedway for the running of the Toyota Tundra 200 on Saturday, August 11th. Live television coverage will be provided by SPEED at 6 p.m. ET with radio coverage coming to you live from MRN Radio.
