Cale Gale, driver of the No. 2 Camping World Chevrolet, fought a tight-handling truck throughout the entire 200-lap event at the O'Reilly Raceway Park.
Friday afternoon, Gale was 21st in the first practice session with a time of 23.305 seconds (105.969 mph). Crew chief Charlie Wilson made many adjustments to the No. 2 truck to try and not only increase the speed, but also attempt to make it more drivable for Gale who had described the truck as "bouncing through the corners." The weather quickly became a factor and the final practice of the day ended early due to rain. At the conclusion of the final practice session Gale was 28th with a time of 23.385 seconds (105.606 mph).
The heavy rainfall continued throughout the afternoon and late into the evening. Qualifying was canceled and the field was set by owner points, leaving the part-time No. 2 Camping World Chevrolet to start the race from the 32nd position. Charlie Wilson made the call to make a final "unapproved" adjustment to the truck to help Gale run better on the short track. By NASCAR guidelines, making the wedge adjustment meant that Gale would start the race at the rear of the field from the 36th spot.
On the first lap of the race, the No. 61 truck checked up and Gale was unable to stop, causing front end damage to the No. 2 truck.
Gale radioed to his crew on lap 17, "the truck is still really tight."
When the caution flag waived on lap 31, it gave the Camping World team an opportunity to work on Gale's truck. Gale went in on lap 33 for four tires and fuel and then headed out to the track. With the caution still underway, he went back to pit road on lap 35 and his crew pulled out the front end damage from the earlier accident. Gale restarted the race 28th.
The next caution occurred on lap 47, and Gale stated "the truck is even tighter now Charlie."
"Okay bud," said Wilson. "Bring it back to pit road and we'll make a track bar adjustment." The crew raised the track bar up four rounds and added fuel to the No. 2 truck. Gale restarted from the 26th position.
Gale was in the 24th position when the yellow flag waved once again on lap 78, and a frustrated Gale exclaimed, "this truck is horrible tight."
Wilson brought his driver back to pit road on lap 80 for four tires, fuel and another track bar adjustment. Gale restarted the race 26th.
On lap 107, Gale and Jon Wood began racing side-by-side and Gale successfully made the pass for 25th place, as the next caution came out on lap 121.
Gale was still having handling issues and this time pitted for four tires, fuel and the crew pulled a rubber out of the left rear spring.
Gale restarted from the 28th position and was able to move up to the 27th spot on lap 144.
"The truck is just too tight," said Gale. "It just has no forward bite left." "Keep digging and you will catch some of the trucks in front of you," said his spotter and father Claude "Bubba" Gale.
Race leader Travis Kvapil passed Gale on lap 166, putting him one lap down. Then on lap 170, Gale's teammate Ron Hornaday passed Kvapil for the lead.
With 20 laps to go, despite having to contend with an extremely tight-handling truck all race, Gale was able to move up three spots and bring the No. 2 Camping World Chevrolet home in 24th place.
