| HORNADAY: Leads for 90 Laps, Wins at ORP at Indianapolis
07-30-2007 | TruckSeries.com Report
Ron Hornaday raced his way to victory lane earning his 32nd Truck Series victory in the rain delayed Power Stroke Diesel 200. He led 90 of the 201 laps, along with running 39 of the fastest laps of the race. With this win, Hornaday has cut Mike Skinner's championship points lead in half, and is currently 77 points out of first place. The last time Hornaday went to victory lane at O'Reilly Raceway Park in the NASCAR Truck Series was in 1997. Hornaday won the Cummins 200 after Jimmy Hensley, who led the first 200 laps, slowed with a flat tire on the final restart. Hornaday won the extended 202-lap race on a green-white-checkered finish. Hornaday had a fast truck from the start of the first practice session on Friday. The No. 33 Camping World Chevrolet was ninth quickest with a time of 23.056 seconds (107.113 mph). By the conclusion of the final practice session, which was shortened due to heavy rain, Hornaday had moved up to the fifth spot, with a time of 22.702 seconds (108.783 mph). At the end of practice crew chief Rick Ren told his driver, "we are pretty darn sporty compared to the rest of the trucks." The heavy rain continued to douse the track and NASCAR made the decision to cancel qualifying and set the field by owner points. Mike Skinner, who is first in the championship point standings, opted to start on the outside of the front row, and Hornaday started on the inside. As soon as the green flag dropped, Hornaday and Skinner were racing each other as hard as they could. By lap 6, the two drivers had put some distance between themselves and the rest of the field. On lap 23, Hornaday passed Skinner and took over the top spot, gaining five valuable bonus points for leading a lap. The first caution flag waved on lap 32, and Hornaday said over the radio that "the truck is a little snug and I wore the tires out already. It's a little slippery, but I don't want to change anything." Hornaday stayed out on the track and the field went back to green-flag racing on lap 42. On lap 48, the caution came out again and Hornaday remained on the track. Hornaday once again pulled away from second place, Todd Bodine on the restart and continued to lead the race until the next caution occurred on lap 79. He headed to pit road for his first scheduled pit stop of the evening for four tires and fuel, and his Camping World team encountered a bit of trouble as they ran around the truck in the slippery wet conditions. Several members of the crew slipped, slowing the pit stop and leaving Hornaday to restart in the sixth position. By lap 95, Hornaday had moved up to the fourth position, and three laps later, the caution flag waved once again. Hornaday had a great restart on lap 104, and was in the second spot by the end of the lap behind leader Travis Kvapil. Bodine made a challenge for the second position, racing Hornaday side-by-side for several laps, which allowed Kvapil to pull away from the field. Hornaday was finally able to secure the position on lap 115, and had his sights set on the leader. With 50 laps to go, Johnny Benson began challenging Hornaday for the second position. The two drivers raced hard but clean for nearly 15 laps until Hornaday was able to pull away from Benson and reel in Kvapil. Hornaday successfully passed Kvapil for the lead on lap 170. The final caution of the race took place on lap 196. Hornaday restated the field on lap 200, and held on to take the checkered flag. Ron Hornaday Quotes: "We are doing everything we need to do to win a championship. Everyone at KHI is working really hard, and doing a great job to help us get there." Rick Ren Quotes: "I grew up in Tilton Ill., and to get my first victory here surrounded by friends and family is just awesome."
