HORNADAY: Truck a Handful, Manages Top Ten at Kentucky

Despite struggling with an ill-handling truck throughout most of Saturday night's race at the Kentucky Speedway, Ron Hornaday earned his seventh top-10 finish of 2007.

During both practice sessions on Friday, the No. 33 Camping World team spent a good amount of time making adjustments to their Chevrolet Silverado. Hornaday posted the thirteenth quickest time in the first practice session with a time of 31.708 seconds (170.304 mph). At the conclusion of the final practice session, Hornaday had moved up to the seventh spot and bettered his performance with a time of 31.257 seconds (172.761 mph).

Hornaday took to the track to qualify the No. 33 truck as usual, but once he entered turn four he drove over a slick area on the track. He slowed the truck down, and stopped before taking the green flag. Hornaday attempted once again to make his qualifying run and once more had trouble in turn four. He held onto the truck and completed the laps, qualifying in the 21st position. After exiting the truck, Hornaday told his team that it felt like he was driving through oil. Crew chief Rick Ren told a NASCAR official about the track conditions, and almost immediately afterward another competitor wrecked his primary truck in the same location attempting to qualify.

Shortly after the field took the green flag in Saturday night's race, Hornaday began making his move towards the front, claiming the 18th position by lap 11.

The first caution flag flew on lap 13, and crew chief Rick Ren told his driver to stay out. A great restart on lap 17 helped Hornaday quickly move forward and by lap 29 he had made it to the 12th position.

On lap 51, the caution flag waved again and Rick Ren asked his driver how the truck was handling. "It's floating the nose of the truck when I drive it into the turns," replied Hornaday. "10-4 Ron," said Ren. "Okay guys when he comes in I want four tires, fuel, a slight air pressure adjustment and raise the track bar up two rounds," exclaimed Ren.

Hornaday headed back out after completing his scheduled pit stop on lap 59 and was running in 10th place. Almost immediately after the restart another caution flag flew, then another on lap 65. Around lap 70 Hornaday exclaimed, "This truck is a handful, we need to change it back to how it was or try something else. The front of the truck is so loose, I can't feel it."

By lap 80, Hornaday had dropped back to the 12th position. "On the next caution if all the leaders come to pit road, bring the truck in and we'll make more adjustments," Ren said.

On lap 96 when the caution flag flew, Hornaday said to his Camping World team, "I can't drive this truck this way. We are just going to keep going backwards." "Alright Ron, bring it in," said Ren. "We need a fast stop guys," Ren told his team.

Hornaday restarted the 150-lap race in the 17th position on lap 101. Every few laps Hornaday was able to move up a position, with his lap times picking up speed. On lap 122, he was behind Todd Bodine in the 11th position, but Bodine was blocking and defending his position. Finally, on lap 136 Hornaday successfully completed the pass for the 10th position and was able to hold off Bodine, earning his seventh top-10 finish of the season.

Ron Hornaday Quote: "It was a really tough night for the Camping World Chevrolet team. We made adjustments to improve the handling of our Chevrolet Silverado, but it made the truck more difficult to drive. We made more changes, and I was able to make it to the 10th spot. It was just a handful almost from the start."
